Soccer: A grand day out for Town

Paul Rutherford fears he will be denied the chance to show Braintree Town what they are missing unless he, or Heybridge Swifts, cough up £1,000.

The Iron will not allow their former goalkeeper to line-up against them in Monday's derby clash if they do not receive the payment.

After losing his place to Danny Gay, Rutherford, 20, left Cressing Road to join Ridgeons League premier division outfit Wroxham last November.

But he was snapped-up by Braintree's Ryman League premier division rivals Heybridge two months later.

The former Tottenham Hotspur trainee has fitted in well at Scraley Road, but he may have to sit out Monday's match.

Braintree chairman Lee Harding explained: "When we agreed to release Paul from his Ryman League contract we agreed that he wouldn't play against us this season unless he, or the club he joined, paid us £1,000.

"We really don't mind what Heybridge do. Paul's a good keeper but we know his strengths and his weaknesses and we're confident that we'll be OK whatever they decide."

Rutherford said: "I'm dying to play so I can help Swifts get a win, but I haven't got a spare grand lying around so I may have to miss the game."

Rutherford is being backed by Swifts committee member Mick Gibson, who said: "We're not happy with Lee Harding and I'm not about to give him £1,000.

"The FA know about the situation and so do the Ryman League. I have sought legal advice over the matter and I'm 99 per cent sure that we would not have a case to answer if we played him. However, there is that one per cent chance and I'm not willing to risk the club's money for it."

Harding added: "When the deal with Heybridge was done, they agreed with the terms of the transfer and we have a letter from them to that effect so I don't know why they are complaining about it now."

typical pikey thing for the braindead to do...a guy who is surplus to requirement stopped from playing against them...i am not happy with this, especially as harding wrote some very uncomplimentary stuff about hedgehog? on the ryman forum..still if we stuff em it will be all the sweeter
