I know it's unprecedented, but UEFA actually have the most sensible thing to say on this matter. Over to director of communications William Gaillard (from BBC website):

 

"If Manchester United had won their group then they would not have been drawn against AC Milan in the knockout stage. Maybe they should consider that."

Agreed, but that would just see a return to the old Eurpoean Cup and UEFA CERTAINLY don't want that!
I CERTAINLY do want to see teams like Real being knocked out in the last 16 and the relatively unfancied Lyon to progress to the quarters as this is the only resemblance to the former glories of the European Cup.

UEFA has segregated the competition for years anyway by devaluing some clubs' achievements in winning their respective leagues by STILL making them play preliminary rounds because their league win is not as important as Liverpool finishing 30 points off the top spot! It's disgusting. If this sort of blatant elitism was happening in a European country, there'd be a f****** coup d'etat!
