type in limewire on jeeves then and youl come up with a site to download softwear to download whatever song you want for free

Which of course doesn't make it legal.

 

If you look at the limewire software it has a members area. Members pay a subscription which then gives them the right to download songs without breaching their copyright.

Agreed. Though you do pay more per track and you have to buy the dross tracks along with the good ones, you do get to control the bitrate and hence the quality. Most download sites (Coka Cola) for example all have their files at 128 Bits per second. Also most use protected WMA format, which is a pain as my IRiver Player does not support them. I have heard, but not confirmed that Napster allows you it pick bitrates other than 128 bits per second.

Minimum you want to rip a cd at is 192.

All my tracks on my MP3 player are at 192, except the freebe ones from the Coka Cola website when they did their promo last year. They are all (3 of them) 128.

DRM WMA files are a bit suspect though. I download three tracks from the Coka Cola website and a few months later had to format my drive. (I have the tracks on a CD-R). Upon redownloading the tracks Media Player informed me I could only do this once more! So if I format my hard drive two more times I assume I would have to buy the tracks again! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Though technically this is also illegal. If you read the small print it will say that you cannot copy the tracks off the disc. Though all the manufacturers of MP3 players must assume that this law will not be enforced as it would make them quite redundant. Some record labels actively try (emphases on try) to stop their CDs from being copied by making them unplayable in a CD-ROM drive! I suppose it is ok as long as you are only using the track in one form at anyone time. If I copied an album to my MP3 player and then gave the CD to my brother that would be dodgy ground.

I have no qualms about copying my cd's to use on my mp3 player.

 

I think the music industry is more concerned about those duplicating for commercial gain & downloading illegally as they are losing revenue in both of these areas.

Selecting one of my Audio CDs at random it states:

 

"Unauthorised copying, reproduction, hiring, lending, public performance and broadcasting of the recorded work is prohibited".

 

This is typical message on most music CD. It is quite interesting though. Say I lend a CD to my brother, he listens to it and then gives it back (makes no copy of it). That seems to break the stated rule. Also the gym I go to, when they have a class on, the instructor plays a music CD while the class is in progress (would this not be "public performance" and "broadcasting"), Again breaking the stated rule.

 

Personally when I buy a Music CD. Make a copy of it for the CD player in my car. I also rip one or more tracks for my MP3 player. 9 times out of 10 the original CD never sees a CD player again! I either listen to the track(s) on my MP3 player or on the CD in the car. All 3 versions are never being used at the same time so this is fine, isn’t it?

 

On another note if the CD is protected. I tend not to bother buying it for these reasons. So the labels attempt to stop the loss in revenue from piracy actually cause a loss in revenue from me not buying it! Oh the irony!

Yep! Unless it states you can do so, for example most computer software's licence agreement states you may make a backup of the software as long as you only restore it to the same computer and one use one copy at a time.
