Supporter of the year award

Geordio Armani as he was known among the more select and debonair of fans.

Haven't seen the Fridge for a while - probably since he'd draped that baby in about 10 tons of Fleet memorabilia just to get in the papers when we went to Villa.

If I remember Nigel correctly, he was once featured in a matchday programme at a time when there was an occasional article about a specific supporter. I have almost certainly still got this and will try and find it.

However, getting back to the original post about this seasons supporter of the year, is this something that other clubs vote on for their own fans? I cannot ever remember this being a G&N initiative before, but seems to be a very good idea. If we were to formalise this perhaps it should be in two categories, one for Trust officers (who would otherwise win year in year out if there was only one general group ) and another for others eg the person who is perceived to do their utmost to support the club either by distance travelled or in the face of adversity etc. What do others think? kmj.

They could be given a squad number as a reward and get to be in the photocall at the beginning of the season... I could just see Kenny sitting next to Daish, next season's Conference trophy between his legs...

Do I remember him?!!! I used to try my best to avoid him but he would speak to me virtually every game. I never had a clue what he was talking about! I remember him turning up at a Barn Dance I once attended at St Georges Church Hall but surprisingly didn't recognise me (to my relief ). He had a very sad end though. He collapsed and died one Boxing Day morning in Dartford town centre on his way to meet the supporter's coach to an away match. I believe that he had spent Christmas with his daughter. His death was mentioned in the Gravesend Reporter. A real character!

The person latterly known as Geordio used to scare us as 10-11 year olds standing by the old fence on the halfway line. Stinking of beer, in stale unwashed clothes, he always used to offer us boiled sweets ! It wouldnt be allowed these days.

As noted earlier , he died waiting for the coach to the Boxing Day match at Chelmsford. Apparently as he had collapsed to the ground , the coach went straight past.

To his death I never understood a word he said, but what a diehard supporter!!

Only just started reading this thread & seen the stuff about Nigel.

I think his 2nd name might have been Handley. He was amazing in the way he would stick limpet like to the terrace behind the goal we were attacking. Before segregation became "de rigeur" it was introduced by the Police for our FA Cup tie against Colchester & pretty stringently enforced, though most people were happy to obey it voluntarily because there were some serious psychos amongst the away support. However, on Match of the Day that night, when Jacko's free kick sailed into the net, right under the noses of the stunned motionless Colchester hordes, there in front of them all, utterly oblivious to his own safety, was a diminutive little figure going absolutely mad. Just as he was down at the Plough end when Peter Mortley's shot went in.

It was either Weldstone or Hillingdon (I get them mixed up becuse they both had utterly foul would be neo nazi youths roaming their terraces) where a group of twa*ts ripped off Nigel's hat & tore it. My mum (who once had to endure Geordie's incomprehensible chatter for an entire coach journey after he plonked himself next to her) went marching off & fetched one of their directors, who credit to the guy came round & made them cough up money to replace it.

Nigel will alwys be my tip for best ever Fleet fan, though to give Kenny (if we're talking Kenny ex Car Park, now programme seller) credit, he's been going for a few decades. Sure I can remember him down at Trowbridge in the 74/75 season when we won the Southern League south title. Incidentally, talking of Kenny, have you noticed how many Fleet stalwarts there have been of indeterminate age? Never look that young, but never age like the rest of us: both Hills brothers, Nigel himself, Darryl Lucas ...

Kenny is a legend among Fleet supporters, not only for his long-term, dedicated attendance, but also for the sheer number of Fleet shirts he has in his collection. I always get a warm glow inside when he sports his heavy cotton number with no badge, but simply 'Gravesend and Northfleet Football Club' written in italics at the top left of the shirt. Such quality cannot be denied.
