Prescott in secret Gills talks

From Medway News

Gillingham FC chairman Paul Scally has had secret talks with Deputy Prime Minister over the future of the football club.

Mr Scally met John Prescott at Priestfield on Wednesday to thrash out plans for a new super stadium.

The Gills boss is hoping for Government help in relocating the club. Mr Prescott has been helping Brighton & Hove Albion FC with their bid to build a new stadium.

Mr Scally said the meeting had been encouraging.

He said "It's priceless to get a 15 minute audience with the Deputy Prime Minister.

"It was a good opportunity to speak to him about our plans for Gillingham FC.

"He understands our reasons for moving out of Gillingham and he knows what a football club can contribute to the regeneration of a town, so he is very excited about it.

"He seemed impressed with our plans so far and has taken more material back with him to read.

"The meeting went very well and he seemed a lovely man. We look forward to hearing from him soon.

Mr Scally revealed he has looked at a dozen sites in Medway and 20 across Kent. He said "None was quite what we were looking for.

"There's not one site that's obvious and easy. Each site has its difficulties and it takes alot of work to assess each one's viability.

A site has to sustanable, non contentious, have good transport links and offer more than just a football club.

"Thats why we are interested in the casino idea. We will now continue with out relocation plans until we manage to secure ownership of the right site.

Mr Scally added: "Ideally we would love to stay in Medway but sites are at a premium.

Mr Scallys preferred site at Temple Marsh, which would have included a retractable roof, primary school and appartments, was dismissed by Medway coucil last year.

The Chairman has warned the club may have to look within a 10 mile radius for its new home.

Mr Scally expects the club will leave Priestfield within the next three years and building will begin on a new stadium by 2007.

After Mr Prescots meeting with Mr Scally he met Labour party members at a conference at Priestfield where Gillingham MP Paul Clark was in audience.

Mr Clark said: "Mr Prescott has always been keen to see whats going on at Priestfield. Who knows, if his team Hull go up, he might be a regular visitor here.

Well Mr Clark that might happen even if Hull don't go up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers. Had seen the headline on the paper of a bloke on my train this morning & was fearing the worst.

Stiil think it would be a good thing to lobby Chris Pond re leaning on Prescott's office to see the Gills stay in Medway & the Fleet in Gravesham.

Sorry Re-Anonymous was not aware of a petition in the Sun, do not buy it, not convinced by a petition these people have to go somewhere and every Council should be made to provide a site, having said that they can be a problem, where my Company is based in Bredgar Rd Gillingham we used to have a huge problem, i would not mind as long as they clean up after themselves and like me obeyed the law.

This re-location is something close to my heart, as people know on this forum i support Gills as well and i do not want Gills in Gravesend, i would keep going with your petition, as for a Scally plan i do not think so.

Write to Paul and ask him outright.
