I was behind the opposition goalie this evening, giving out some well earned abuse, when i glanced over to see a few 14-16 year olds SPITTING AT THE DAGENHAM GOALKEEPER!!!

It turned my stomach to witness such a yobbish act.

If i was the dagenham goalie i would put in a complaint as he clearly knew what they were doing.

The stewarding was appalling - at half time we were trying to get through to the shed behind the goal, but there was a bit of a bottle neck - it was a home supporter and his son sat in the walkway. There were three stewards, all stood on the pitch, all within 5 yards and all looking away from the stand and out onto the pitch - what exactly did they think that they were there for?

well i was also behind the goal and there were a group of baseball capped 18-22 year olds who lobbed a coin which struck the keeper in the back of the head, it must have hurt him as he was holding his head.

this same group were also shouting and chanting some of the worst abuse i've heard, things about the keepers kids!!!! they were also planning to confront dagenham fans, i unfortunately was stuck to the left of them and the younger teens were just playing and acting off these yobs.

i'm never going to another fleet game again after that sick yobbish behaviour!

Unfortunately, as we start to do well and move up a league we are always likely to get a lot of fools jumping on the bandwagon and only turning up to cause trouble.

This of course requires better stewarding, as many have already pointed out.

This season represents a massive learning curve for the club,

on and off the pitch and I'm sure that with more experiance things

like stewarding will improve. As for the coin throwing incident,

did any of the behind the goal regulars witness that ? I'm sure

if these yobs were identified the club would make sure they never

entered Stonebridge Road again but obviously the real fans

have to help if the unwanted moron minority are going to be removed.

I am getting just a litle bit fed up with people reporting acts of mis-behaviour AFTER THE EVENT! If you see some going on report it to an official and something can be done about it!

I would agree that the club is still below standards on the stewarding front but appeal after appeal is made for people to volunteer, with little or no result. Why not try it yourself before slagging off the club, it helps no-one. Bear in mind that Bob Gunton is one of the best qualified stewards around, but he can only be in one place at a time.

Anyway there is no excuse, as last night there were bucketfuls of Police (Specials and full-timers) on duty both inside and outide the ground, they have the power to eject anyone from the ground if they see fit.... I bet nobody reported anything. That is their job and it will help the club if we can get rid of troublemakers before they become regulars.

As a matter of fact, I thought the atmosphere created by both sets of supporters was first class, respect is due to the Daggenham supporters for that! Good luck to them for the rest of the season.

i've just checked the forum again and i must say if i or the people around had reported the incidents and vile abuse it could have made matters alot worse as there were a crowd of 15 of them and they were big lads, and there were about at least 30 teens around 'up for the craic'

so surely you can appreciate that i used my head and didn't make the situation any worse, some of them were wearing suits though and were smartly dressed so hardly your token thug but the behaviour was shocking and as i said earlier has put me off if this is what comes with playing at a higher level!! sorry!!

You can't have it both ways Steve.

On one hand you say that you will not come again because of bad behaviour, and on the other you are not prepared to help the club do something about it.

I'm sure the police and the stewards would have been able to handle the situation without making matters worse. Even if it was just a quiet word informing the culprits that they would be out if they continued on their errant path.

As a club we do want to remove this element but we can't do anything if all people do is complain about it after the event.

We have had this at the Vic too and unfortunately it comes with the territory, the bigger the game, the more idiots and the easier for them to hide.

We have had to learn how to steward the bigger crowds through making mistakes and still haven't learned all the lessons yet. The mess at the Ipswich FA cup tie last season was unbelievable but you have to keep plodding away and more bigger games means that your team is doing well.

My attitude when I see something is that the guys in the flourescent jackets get paid to steward so find one and let them deal with it. Trying to do something yourself ends up with you getting into trouble yourself inevitably. The trick is, of course, finding one at the right moment. Almost impossible at Dagenham regretably.

It was a great atmosphere last night and credit to both sets of fans for that. I would suggest that it is best not to give away your covered end thouigh as the noise out of there is really impressive. You may find you do better with segregated games where away fans are kept in the open.

Sorry to go about this topic, but it is a subject close to my heart. The whole reason we have stewards is to stop trouble before it begins. It doesn't matter about the size or quantity of tossers that cause problems, get hold of a steward, well away from the area if you think you could get yourself in trouble and REPORT IT! You should'nt get involved yourself, that really is asking for trouble, BUT actually doing something rather than moaning about it afterwards is the only way to stamp out this sort of thing. You go to these games to enjoy yourself, why let the actions of a very, very small minority, cause offence?

Bear in mind we have just been host to one of the more pleasant bunch of supporters, wait until Saturday or when we get Doncaster, then you will see just why we have to segregate. Unfortunately its the price of success to a certain extent, and all the more reason to enjoy nights like Tuesday.

I agree with you there Dave. There's no point in having stewards at the ground if people don't report such things to them. They clearly can't see everything that goes on in a crowd of 2000+ people. It's a shame that stevem witnessed such behaviour at the match, but by not doing anything he hasn't helped the club in any way. These people will still be there Saturday, which could have been prevented had someone told the stewards on Tuesday night!

I totally agree with andy Y and his comments. I was directly behind them during the game at the Shed end but they seemed to disappear at half time and I could not spot them. I did hear the really bad verbal being dished out and thought it was appalling. Saying things about his children are way out of line. Calling him a Sheep S###ger! was amusing and it was good when he played to the crowds with it!. He certainly enjoyed the 2nd half more but coin throwing is dangerous and Stricly forbidden. If I did see it, I would certainly report it!. We should try and calm the swearing down alittle as more children are now present during the games(mind you some of the kids need thier mouth washig wiv soap ).We can give verbal without the swearing, just use our imaginations a little more!. Anyway on a calm note, lets really get behind Fleet on saturday and cheer em on as much as we can. Also are the two alien friends that turned up on Tuesday paying for entrance! They where good sports letting the fleet fans lob em about at each other!

You dont need to have a go at Dave - if your wife got little response from the stewards, I hope she can identify them again so that the club can discuss this with them and offer additional training to them on the correct course of action in such a situation.

In a similar way to that where no-one reports the troublemakers, the club can do little to improve the standard of stewarding unless such things are brought to their attention.

Lets not forget the Stewards are volunteers and are bound to make mistakes in the way they handle things, as we havent really had these issues previously - the only way they can improve their skills is with assistance from others.

If that's the case, then the system isn't working as well as it should.

If you have time before the match on Saturday, then could you pop into the office behind the stand and speak to Bob Gunton, so that he can take the appropriate action.

As Alan W said we are all on a learning curve at this level, and we can only get better if the club are told of mistakes so that they can be corrected.
