Thanks CG for the picture of that great Melchester Rovers Goalkeeper the Great Tubby Morton, can you remember the team.

Of course it was the old style formation.

Tubby Morton

Dave Williams Bobby Roberts

Hughie Griffiths Paddy Ryan Buster Brown

Dick Stokes Blackie Gray Roy Race Jimmy Hallett Tom Dawson

Then came the greats like Bomber Reeves, Tony Storme, Ossie Jones and even the Spanish player Pedro Dias, plus many others i remember most of them, for you younger fans who think we are cracked, well we are.

Light entertainment on this dark sad night.

Tubby's profile:

Tubby made his debut for the Rovers in September 1958 against league leaders Gravesend & Northfleet. Tubby was a converted centre-half who kept goal on and off for 25 years and played his last league game for the Rovers in 1983.

On his debut his inexperience showed as he let in two soft goals. He quickly regained his nerve and the game was drawn 3-3. Tubby was an England International and played with Roy and Geoff Giles in Mexico 1970.

In October 1973 Tubby broke his leg and was replaced by new boy Charlie "The Cat" Carter. At the beginning of the 1974 season Tubby started training again and regained his place due to Charlie being torn between continuing with the Rovers and taking up a career as a pop star. In September 1974 Tubby was again injured and retired from the game. Then manager Tony Storme gave Tubby the job of managing and training the 'A' team. Charlie then settled into the role as Rovers number 1.

When Charlie was injured in 1983 Tubby Morton made an emotional comeback, keeping Charlie from regaining his place following his return from injury. Charlie did however regain the number 1 jersey and Tubby stepped down for good.

He now runs a country pub near the South Coast.
