Jake Whincup

I see that Jake Whincup played for Redbridge in their 4-1 defeat at Redbridge on Saturday. It didn't say whether he was on loan or not. Good to see he is getting a regular game even if it is in a side doomed to relegation.

Jens lehmann never lost a game last season and kept the most clean sheets but hes still poo, its not all about the keeper, its the defence partly.

So are you saying our 'water tight' defence made Jake look better than he was?!! That's one of the funniest things I've heard in ages!

Individually, Daly and Saulsbury are excellent defenders. If you are suggesting, though, that our defence as a whole limits the number of opportunities it gives attacking teams then you are mistaken. You only have to look at our goals against column to see that.

Take the last two games as examples. Chelmsford defended so well to the point that their keeper barely had to make a save all game whereas on Tuesday night, Heybridge wasted more than half a dozen gilt edged opportunities (plus one amazing Allaway save) before we let them equalise.

I'm not disagreeing with you entirely, Mark! I think the view that Jake was a great shot stopper but poor on crosses is right. His height was against him in that respect although it's interesting that we remember Jake as a good keeper despite that fault whereas Alan Foster was considered not very good specifically because of the same thing.

Shaun is certainly better in the air than either of those however and if his save just before the equaliser on Tuesday had been done by a premiership keeper they'd be showing it on Sky for weeks.

My point was really that our defence doesn't limit the opposition probably as much as it should although that's not aimed solely at the defenders (attack as a team, defend as a team concept) and our overtly attacking style doesn't help in that respect either.

I'm with you on this one,Jake's record for slough

was P17 W11 L3 D3 he was beaten 16 times and kept 9 clean sheets

Shaun's first 17 games W7 L8 D2 he was beaten 28 times he kept 4 clean sheets

Shaun is a top rated keeper, but Jake is a bit more than a good shot stopper who is crap on crosses, give him a bit of credit.

I think Jake is a very good young prospect, but for whatever reason, could not get the respect of his defence and did end up looking very shaky with an aerial balls coming into the box.

I don't think we would have beaten Walsall with Jake in goal either.
