The official attendance.....

Recommended Posts

Maybe it is either apathy, or a decent train link to London, Southend and Colchester? Every time we have played there the bar seems to be heaving before, during and after games, but isn't that the case at most grounds at our level? The trouble is now with wall-to-wall TV football coverage the magic just ain't there anymore. The game is far too sanitized today. I may sound like an old gimp (I'll be watching for replies), but just take a look at the FA Cup attendances in recent years as an example.

Kids are not brought up watching their local non-league side anymore. When they see the best on Sky then toddle off to their local ground their first impression is: "what a load of sh!t." Years ago you built up to the best. Nowadays it is all on tap 24/7. On this very subject it will be interesting to see what the crowd is for the Southend Manor v Burnham Ramblers league game is tonight.

I watched most of Halifax v York on telly last night...... I still haven't been to The Shay yet... I've adopted Huddersfield and the mighty Brighouse Town... but yes I think you're about right Coup. I had hoped that the sudden leap in cost of pro football (the working man's game - ha!) some years ago, non-league footy might benefit. Naive deluded fool that I was. It grieves (Greaves?) me to see kids wandering round Enfield (even at the old Southbury Road) wearing Man U, Liverpool and Newcastle shirts.

I was surprised to see the number of Man U shirts sported around West Yorkshire, probably at least equalling the number of Leeds shirts (yes Huddersfield are about next, never see a Bradford shirt). OK Manchester is very close, just a nip over the M62, but I had imagined the old Roses rivalry would make such an allegiance anathama. But no, the power of TV, glory hunting, peer pressure, marketing, 1958 and George Best outweigh all decent honest traditional values like parochial bigotry... sory I mean local loyalty.

Not sure what this has all got to do with Burnham or Eton Manor but I think there's a connection.

Moan moan rant rant.....

cup games are charged for Squad for everyone, including romford kids, we only allow free entry for home league games

That was not what I was really getting at, it was the fact that you where charging £3.00 for a "Babe in Arms" so to speak.

I feel that you have a point there SL and perhaps the powers that be at our club might put some thought to a system that has a flexible attitude to letting in youngsters who are obviously too young to look after themselves free of charge to ALL home games and not just league ones.

Such a philosophy could attract more adults through the turnstyles who might otherwise stay at home looking after their offspring.

It is Southend Manor v WALTHAM< ABBEY Gordon Brasted Trophy Semi Final that should have been played on the 5th March, it was in the Centre Spot, if its not played tonight ( weather looks good here in Colchester) then it we have arranged for Thursday.

Visited Enfield Towns ground yesterday with a gent from the FA and a gent from the Southern League for ground gradeing for promotion, I must say you have done a lot of work since I Refereed there a couple of seasons ago, very inpressed.
