Southgate College

Recommended Posts

Southgate College are two games away from retaining the English FA Colleges' Trophy.

The college's U18 side made it through to the semi-final of the prestigious national competition after a 4-2 extra-time win over South Nottingham College.

One of the heroes of last year's cup success was goalkeeper Phil Merritt, who again proved his worth in Nottingham, though in quite a different role.

Merritt has swapped his gloves for a place in Southgate's midfield, and he came up trumps in this latest triumph, with one of the vital extra-time goals.

The hosts started the better side on a difficult pitch.

But their opener was soon cancelled out by Luke Majid, and then centre-back Adam Kingston put Southgate ahead.

The holders held the lead until 20 seconds from time, when a Nottingham equaliser sent the match into extra time.

Southgate dominated the extra 30 minutes, with Merritt and winger Deniz Mehet netting to send them through.

The college should find out this week who their opponents will be in the semi-final.
