Not being funny Harry, but picking a team to support if Gravesend go out sounds a bit pathetic to me.

Fair enough your entilted to your oppinion even if it is wrong.

When I say support I don't mean it in the normal sense of the word, I mean a team I tip for the competition and I want to be proved right. I don't feel good when they win it I feel gutted because my lot went out.

When Chelsea lost to Barcelona in 2000 I was gutted, but because I was sort of a fan of theirs I supported them in the next round. Although I found myself supporting Real Madrid at times because Barca had knocked my team out.

What about international football? FF you an Enland fan right? So when Lampard, Cole and Defoe play for England you want them to do well despite that they used to play for your second team (West Ham) and now play for you rivals.

Just proves how unique we 'old fashion' footy fans are, and I hate to say it, we are also a dying breed.. Many of those 5-6000 loyal fans fom the 50s would be turning in their graves if they knew how poor the support is today.

I don't think it's a bad thing that someone wants to support another 'higher level' team, as I know the chances of them ever seeing them LIVE (apart from TV) is slim. So to get his-her football fix, they will have to watch the Fleet instead... and it's a damn fine level of football.

Thanks for clearing that up.

To me, the word 'support' implies that you are actually doing something for the benefit of the club in question - most commonly, of course, attending the games. I've always liked Arsenal (no sniggering at the back), but in recent years I've realized that I can't be considered an actual 'supporter' of the club, since I don't go to the matches - or at least haven't for a few years, and even then it was only a small handful of games.

So for me to say, hypothetically, that I 'support' Real Madrid as well as the Fleet would be pretty risible. Of course, I could be an admirer of Real Madrid, but not a 'supporter'. In what way is watching a side from a foreign country play on television contributing to that club's development?

How can someone’s opinion be wrong? It’s like saying I support so and so because… or I vote so and so because… The person might give a stupid reason for doing so but it doesn’t make them wrong.

Getting a bit confusing now you’ve thrown Real Madrid (Barca’s arch rivals) into the equation as well. Do you support any other teams? If Chelsea get knocked out in the next stages would you be inclined to support the team that has beaten them (say Milan), or would you choose Inter because their Milan’s rivals?

I always support my country in competitive games no matter what. The fact that players leave certain clubs to play for their rivals has nothing to do with wearing the three lions.

PISH, all of it. I support the fleet. full stop.

but the other night i wanted chelsea to win because i think mourinho is head and shoulders funnnier than any other yawn manager.

he is an entertainer.

But i do not support them , couldnt give a toss about any other team reaally.

And to support three or four teams is weird.

weird

weird

I always want arsenal to lose, dunno why, just hate them. Think its the wenger factor.

You can only support one team. The rest you watch on tv or when you cannot get to your teams games.

A football fan watches match of the dya or football first or goals on sunday or the championship etc etc, but You can only support ONE team truly, fully and properly.

Ha-ha, add me to the anti-Arsenal list as well. I Despise them, get almost as much of a kick from them loosing as seeing my team win.

Although I have to be honest and say that I’m not overly keen on Chelsea’s success this year either. Wouldn’t have shed any tears if they’d have got knocked out the other night. Can’t wait for the day that the Russian looses interest and removes his money from the club and Chelsea becomes the next Leeds. Wonder who their plastic supporters will follow then?

I don’t hold with all this supporting other English clubs in Europe nonsense. Most of their players are foreign so where’s the English link? How exactly are Arsenal and Chelsea English teams anyway? There all foreign mercenaries. English Championship should be awarded to the team with an all English line up who finish highest.

While I think that it is arguable that you can only devote support for a single football team seriously (using the definition offered by jc ) that you are able to contribute something to, that shouldn't prevent a person from being legitimately interested in the fortunes of other teams.Or for that matter other sports or interests. I have always supported the Fleet from childhood. My grandad used to take me with him to Stonebridge Road. We would go in all weathers and were loyal supporters. But we also went to see Charlton Athletic at the Valley and I think that this gave me a broader experience of football than simply watching just one side. On one memorable Good Friday we went to watch Charlton play in the morning and the Fleet in the afternoon! When I met my future wife she was ( and still is ) a Hammers fan and I also went to see them play and because of their ethos and stylish players I adopted them as my Football League team. However all the while I still supported the Fleet watching as many games at home and away as I could afford. It never occured to me that there was anything wrong in this arrangement. They were not in competition with each other. Over the years I eventually came only to watch the Fleet and have not been to The Valley since it was redevelloped or seen The Irons live since Sir Trevor Brooking retired from the game. This does not stop me from having an interest in WHUFC and from time to time I listen to commentary from their games on the radio. I am devoted to the Fleet but am not so blinkered as to have no other interests. Similarly I have a friend who supports both Arsenal and Exeter City and who goes to watch them both. They have totally different qualities but they are not incompatible. But I also believe that you can still support a team even if through circumstances it is no longer possible to attend games eg the elderly or infirm or people who now live abroad. Traditionally football supporters supported the side that they were geographically closest to or their family already followed. Some people jump on the bandwagon of success and while their support may eventually become sincere, it is also founded upon shallow roots and somehow seems less worthy. As for a foreign element I have friends who live in the Netherlands and I look out for the results of RKC Waalwijk who are their local team. I don't "support" them in the traditional sense but I feel that I have a legitimate reason to follow their fortunes nevertheless. kmj.
