Has Toby lost his marbles?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, that's kids all over it seems...! My lad supports Chelsea, but since bringing him to GNFC he is fixated, especially as Jay plays... Having said that, he will also follow Real Madrid, Barca, Juve and Ajax... only because of the superstars.. and I guess, his idols.!

Can’t understand that! - Supporting Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juve and Ajax? I was perhaps wrongly under the impression that most children were glory-hunting Manchester United, Chelsea or Arsenal - I didn’t realise the situation was that bad now.

When I was at school nearly everyone supported London teams with perhaps a handful or so Gillingham supporters. I remember that for some reason most of the Asian guys supported Liverpool with the odd Everton or Man United fan thrown in – but supporters of non-London teams were in a minority and were never really taken seriously and always seen as a bit of a joke. I never understood how someone could follow a team a hundred miles away, so to hear that kids nowadays support foreign sides as well is comical.

Yup, sign of the times pal... What I notice nowadayds is that London is full of Cockney Reds (Man U) fans... Must be the new money that has come into town from afar... the core London club's fans are slowly being pushed out...! Hence the likes of Charlton looking deeper into Kent for supporters..!

I grew up in East London, and West Ham was THE club to follow... gotta say, most of the Hammers fans I knew have now abandoned them (due to dropping outta Prem Div) just proves how fickle supporting a team is nowadays - especially for our kids..!

No heart and soul anymore... I say, get behind the club that is local to you and give them your all, this way, small clubs like GNFC will have continued support throughout future generations..

I noticed some pictures from years ago on the Trust website, blimey, there must have been 5-6000 supporters at every match... far cry from where we are today.. It's a generation thing, and it's up to us (older followers) to keep the dream alive..!!!

F**K me, I can go on a bit, sorry if this sends you to sleep..!!

I suport Chelsea, Barcelona and Cagliari as well as the fleet.

Barcelona because I went there once and when I returned home I found the games were on the tele so I just started watching them, Cagliari because Zola plays for them. I don't really support them I just wouldn't cheer for the team their playing for. Hard to understand, but it is hard to explain. By the way the other night I didn't support Barca, I was Chelsea all the way.

Agree with you Number 8, As the population of London changes the representation of teams support within the capital is also changing. Where as once upon a time most people in east London followed the hammers, nowadays the large number of Pakistani’s or Bangladeshi’s residing in the East End mean that West Ham are not so well supported there anymore. Same with Tottenham and to a lesser extent Arsenal in north London. However if you go to Stevenage, St Albans, Romford or Slough, nowadays your more likely to come across more and more Spurs, Arsenal, West Ham and Chelsea fans. As far as I can see Millwall are pretty much the only London club who draws the majority of their support from the local area.

I remember when supporting a football team meant that you actually had to make the effort to go and watch them regularly. Never fails to crack me up nowadays how youngsters profess to support teams that they only ever see on telly – hardly a supporter watching the highlights on Match of the Day.

There you go...!! So we agree that support for huge clubs no longer depends on location or your personal habitaion. Man U has the biggest fanbase than any other club and most of those are Asia/Pacific (China,Japan, Malaysia etc..)

So, as opposed to umpteen years ago, unless you own a season ticket, and are lucky to get one or the use of one, you have absolutely no chance of seeing your 'huge' club play LIVE..!! Unless on TV.

That's why keeping it real and supporting teams like GNFC are much more enjoyable in my opinion. Just need to convince the younger generation to do the same, however, you will not see millions of kids weraing a GNFC shirt out and about at weekends apart from the small amount of hardy young fans who travel to GNFC matches with their dad's..

No mate not what I'm saying. I haven't had a look to see how Cagliari are doing for ages. Perhaps saying I support these teams is where I'm going wrong, if Caglairi win the league I'd BE happy but if Juventus win the league I wouldn't be as happy.

And yes FF, if Barca had won I would want them to win but I would still be gutted Chelsea went out. I don't see how you lot can't see where I'm coming from. If Gravesend lose in the trophy I'll then choose a team still in it that I want to win. I suppose what I'm saying is I choose a team that I want to win from every game I watch, but if they lose I don't care.

However when it's Chelsea or the Fleet that lose I do care.

One thing I'm also sickened by (though not physically) is the fact that promising youngsters have absolutely no chance of being snapped up by top flight teams due to the competitiveness of the current game. Most BIG teams like Chelsea,Arsenal, Man U etc etc blah blah... would prefer to buy players in from abroad to enhance the scope of their team. Competing in the Champ League and European Cup means a team MUST have more experienced (usually foreign) players in order to be competitive. This is not good for the English game as many of our young hopefuls are subjected to playing in lesser valuable leagues and peaking way below a level they are capable of.. You see all to often only a handful of British born players given chances to play on an international field with exception of the National squad - who in part are nothing compared to the national squad 66. We will never win a World Cup or Euro Cup simply because, we do not have enough experience playing at this level.

In 5-10 years time, the England squad will comprise of only Championship level players, as the Prem will have no quality UK born players to choose from.

It's all about money and running a football club as a viable business, which has taken all things great out of our beloved game... it used to be football first, business later, now that is just a distant memory.. Shame, that's why I will avoid the BIG clubs and remain loyal to GNFC.

Choosing another team to support when your team get knocked out of the competition! What’s football coming too!

I’ll watch a Champions League match if I’m at home but I couldn’t care less about the Champions League as the team I follow don’t play in it, and to be honest I can’t take the Champions League seriously anyway. It’s obvious that Uefa do everything in their power possible to try and fix a Juventus versus Barcelona or Real Madrid versus AC Milan final every year anyway. They must have been gutted when Porto and Monaco contested last years show piece. I honestly believe that if the games governing bodies had their way they’d scrap all the minor leagues and national leagues and replace them with some kind of Pepsi, Sony or McDonalds Sponsored European Super League. Do Uefa and the FA care about supporters of lower-League and non-league clubs? I don’t think so; probably view them as an unwanted irritation if anything.

I still go to watch the Premiership club at most home and quite a few away matches, but it’s not the same anymore. I’m fed up of paying £35 for a ticket, to be surrounded by ‘new-age’ fans and Norwegian or Japanese tourists, so I over the last five years I’ve watched Fleet more and more.

Not being funny Harry, but picking a team to support if Gravesend go out sounds a bit pathetic to me.

Fleet used to get 5000 odd in the 1940-1950 era, but as travel to the London sides got easier support dropped off, the first game i saw at Stonebridge Road was in 1960 when Gillingham played Hartlepool because Priestfield was closed due to some crowd trouble, i have supported Gills and Fleet ever since, at Colyer Road School most kids were Spurs because of the double winning team, then came Liverpool, you were considered a joke if you supported Fleet, until that magic day we beat Carlisle away and played Sunderland.

My Grandad and Uncle always took us lot to Spurs, Arsenal and West Ham in the early sixties, never got round to supporting any of those clubs though.

Many Fleet Supporters support 2 teams, but never heard of support for Spanish and Italian etc before.
