Segregation on Saturday

Recommended Posts

I have this morning written to Brian Kilcullen, as follows:

Dear Mr Kilcullen

I have been a Fleet supporter for 38 years, and have seen the club progress from the laughing stock of Kent to a major player in Conference football.

Our fans are considered in football circles as the fairest and most generous around. We have supported Margate’s plight (despite being rivals), have struck great rapport with our new rivals Canvey, and always respect our opposition fans when they visit the Fleet. Many Scarborough fans even signed our petition to keep Gillingham from Ebbsfleet.

We applauded to a man Slough’s 30 yarder and gave those hardy Scarborough souls a generous Fleet cheer after the game.

I feel our generosity was somewhat failed by the Club on Saturday.

You will probably be aware of scores of comments on our popular Fans forum ,both by fleet regulars and by Scarborough fans who felt the stewarding on Saturday was a little inflexible.

Whislt I appreciate the closure of the Northfleet stand will cause some overcrowding problems until it is rectified, and I am fully aware that segregation is a matter for the police – not the club, we must adopt a more reasoned approach to our customer care.

Chris Baker (representing the Club?) has issued a statement, which appears on ours and both of the Scarborough forums, apologising for the unreasonable treatment dealt by the stewards in not permitting a number of elderly away fans to seek shelter during the blizzard at half time. It was seriously cold, and clearly caused a great deal of distress to a number of away fans.

What is done is done. We need to learn from our mistakes, instruct our stewards in the art of man management, use their 2-way radios and sort problems before they develop into serious problems.

It would be a superb gesture if a Director or yourself wrote a personal note of apology to the Chairman of Scarborough, publish it on the forum, and perhaps offer the travelling 40 or so Scarborough fans the option of a free stand seat in the fixture next year, to enable them to watch in comfort.

These three actions alone would restore the high esteem the Fleet and it’s fans are held in non – league circles and would show the football community (and the potential new fans in Ebbsfleet) that we really are a caring family club.

The damage has been done... Just hope the Scarboro' supporters can put this experience behind them and continue to visit us in future. When they do, that's when the club should express extra gratification, and offer them better use of our facilities. I'm sure all concerned are feeling sheepish about it and will want to avoid similar situations occurring again.

Just hope we are treated fairly next time we play them away..!!

I agree totally with the sentiments of my fellow Fleet Supporters. Despite me and my chums being amused in a twisted "football supporter" sort of way, as we watched our band of orange jacketted storm troopers ensure that the poor old Boro supporters got totally soaked to the skin, before allowing them to leave the terrace and get under cover, I apologise to the Boro guys.

However, these "stewards" bring hours of entertainment to us, as they scurry around the ground in their black bomber jackets, giving out all manner of "urgent" messages to each other.

We all look around the ground wondering if the Chelsea Shed End or a band of Millwall Bushwackers have entered the stadium !

But no ! there's nothing happening, but we still hear them refer to things like "situation amber" etc. But, what are they talking about ? No-one knows ?

It's shame they can't mix a bit of concrete and fix the Northfleet End terracing ! ..... or arrest the drummer boy for noise polution offences ! The sooner he's back behind that goal away from decent folk, the better.

He he... I really enjoyed reading that RR..!

I also wonder what is happening when the stewards run around like FBI agents. All I can put it down to is their tea is getting cold or someone has been short-changed at the burger bar...!!

I reckon they are playing 'it' with each other, and the mad scurrying about is the fella who is 'it' trying to catch a colleague to make him 'it'... my kids play it all the time, and it looks exactly the same..!!

Thanks for the compliment Number 8

It is purely an observation, and one that I feel a lot of people will have empathy with !

I have also to say, that I've got soaked at segregated away grounds just like the Boro guys did on Saturday, so its not just a "Fleet Thing".

But the "stewards" great entertainment value - better even than the mysterious "Hooky" !

Excellent CG hope it works, agree the stewards are great entertainment value, i would send them to Charlton or Gills for training, although we laugh the Steward position is very important and you should have the correct training.

I heard that the internal workings of 'Hooky' are actually female, and on closer observation, I tend to agree.

Signs to look for:

1) The way 'Hooky' runs.

2) The way 'Hooky' kicks a ball

3) The way 'Hooky' misses the goal

4) The way 'Hooky' is nice to children

5) The whole 'Hooky' package oooozes femaninity.

Next time you see 'Hooky', I bet you'll be looking for these signs..?

The "guy" who's inside Hooky will love these comments Number 8.

I know he IS a guy !

And fair play to the chap, he paid for all that outfit himself and does the whole pre-match thing free of charge to the club (unlike the orange stormtroopers I might add !)

He also looks quite useful in front of goal at times ! I've seen him whack a few past Wilko in the warm-up, but then who hasn't in recent months ... ooooch !

I wonder if Hooky logs on here ?

Then I retract my comments regarding 'Hooky' being a lady..!! Could of sworn it was..!
Never mind, keep up the good work.!!!!

Without wishing to rake up the whole transsexual thread again (calm yourself Harry J), I imagine poor old Hooky finds it difficult to maintain his male poise and elegance in a rubber suit that probably chafes quite a bit if he's only got shorts underneath...
