Desborough - Locke - Gooding - Dear - Southon - Bowes - Allen - Johnson - Glynn - Stowe - Douglas.

Subs - Hill for Dear on 63, Tomlinson, O'Connor, Maynard for Stowe on 63, Williams.

Scorer Southon on 65.

Weather - snail turning to snow, then rain - six degrees at start, dropping to one degree at end.

First half was mainly Grays, but their finishing was very poor, and the one nil half time score was about right, the number eleven scoring (Olayinka, I think, but the tannoy was none to good with the line ups).

Half time was interesting with a non stop red and white army chorus at the covered end of the ground.

Second half and Urchins looked impressive, taking the game to Grays. Ashley Bayes made a couple of good saves, but turning point came when Aleen mistimed a tackle in the snow and was red carded - not too sure if it was a second yellow, as I put the wrong number down in the first half when there was a booking - (I had Jamie's name down twice - I know the second one was not Jamie, but cannot remember who it was). The red card was a poor decision, and Grays took full advantage, as the free kick led to their second goal, scored by Thurgood with Urchins still wonddering what on earth the referee was thinking off, and with Jamie still out of position after disputing the sending off.

Maynard on for Stowe - Stowe incidentally had two good shots in the first half and was really putting in a lot of work in the second half, and Hill for Dear.

Urchins had their best spell, forcing Grays back onto defence. Doug went close, and a couple of near misses, before Southon levelled from close range. Grays did not look all that good at this point, but scored with a break away goal fifteen minutes from the end - the tannoy person sensibly did not announce the scorer, and nor will I - the left winger got another and John Martin got the last goal.

Five one was most certainly not a fair reflection on the effort put in by the Urchins.

The crowd was about 900 at a guess, and quite a strong following from Hornchurch, about 50 of whom did a conga around the ground, much to the annoyance of the home stewards in the second half.

A few nasty moments as a handful of Grays supporters took exception to the non stop chanting, and it was very nice to see Tony Choules and his assistant - sorry I still cannot remember his name - come around at the end to thank everyone.

The Hornchurch supporters were asked to leave via a building site at the far end of the ground, and the stewards tried unsuccesfully to enforce this - I simply walked right past them.

I would say that despite the apparant heavy defeat, this was a promising performance - for Hornchurch my player of the match was Southon and Chris Stowe, with a mention of Sean Dear who never stopped trying. Jamie looked far more effective in his role and attacking midfield.

Hmm,

First half was poor where we defended the 18 yard box. Jamie was very luck to be on the pitch after a dreadful tackle right in front of the ref. Sean dear had a poor game where he was afraid to tackle, we ended up having others to come over to cover for his lack of action.

The heavy pitch affected the Doug and I was surprised to see Chris Stowe substituted instead of Dougie, Chris had the better performance of the two.

0-1 at half time reflected the half. final score did not reflect our performance in the second half.

Urchin faithful were excellant, I don't think Grays knew how to deal with a Congo during the second half when we were 2-0 down.

regards

I did not think Jamie's tackle even warranted a booking.

But the referee dished out yellow cards each time a visiting player made a tackle, so it's hardly surprising one or two players were reluctant to make a challenge.
