Firefighters Benefit Match

Recommended Posts

Sporting and screen celebrities are putting on their football boots to help boost the memorial fund for firefighters Michael Miller and Jeff Wornham, who died while trying to rescue people trapped by fire in a Stevenage tower block.

The Arsenal Celebrity XI is taking on a Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue team in a benefit match, hosted by Stevenage Borough FC at its Broadhall Way stadium. Tickets for the game, which kicks off at 2pm on Sunday March 20, are now on sale. All proceeds will go to the Stevenage Firefighters Fund.

The Arsenal squad will include soccer stars Paul Davies, Perry Groves, Chris White, Martin Hayes and Ian Allinson. Also in the line-up will be rugby league player Martin Offiah MBE, England cricketer Mark Ramprakash and a host of TV stars. Ralf Little who showed dazzling defensive skills in ‘The Match’ and has also appeared in ‘The Royle Family’ and ‘Two Pints of Lager…’ will be joined by Phil Daniels from ‘Quadrophenia’, ‘Outlaws’ and ‘Gimme, Gimme Gimme’ and Mark Burdis from ‘Operation Good Guys’ and ‘Grange Hill’.

The idea of the benefit match to raise money for the memorial fund came from Buntingford based firefighters Tony Dent and Chris Meadows who turn out regularly for local soccer sides. “It was a great idea that has been made possible through the goodwill of the Arsenal Celebrity team and Stevenage Borough FC,” said Deputy Chief Fire Officer Roy Wilsher. “When they were asked for their support, they responded wholeheartedly. We very much appreciate their generosity. Both Michael and Jeff enjoyed sport, so playing the beautiful game is a very appropriate way of remembering them both.”

Stevenage Borough Chairman Phil Wallace said: “We were all shocked by the recent events and felt it was the least that we could do to help, and show our appreciation of the job the Fire & Rescue Service does for the community. We hope to get a really good crowd at Broadhall Way and to raise as much as possible for the firefighters fund.”

Tickets for the game cost £5 for adults, £3 for children and will be on sale on the day and are also available now from the Stevenage Borough club shop, which opens from 5pm to 7pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

A very worthy cause, Webbo.

I get SO annoyed when people say fire-fighters are overpaid and under-worked.

I trust all the locals will support this match.

I saw the news item about the two lads that died - so tragic that two people lost their lives trying to save others. This is a superb cause, and our Firemen deserve the utmost respect for doing a tremendously brave job. These people are absolute heroes.

But Big J.R. - I will say this once, and only once...

NEVER insinuate we're local to Stevenage.

Have to agree with all you say mate. These people deserve so much more ...

One of the young men who lost their life was the son of a former manager of one of our youth teams. He and his side left last year for pastures new but we keep in touch so we have donated to this worthy fund already but are running a charity event later this season to help more if we can....

...also recent events have made me feel the same about nurses ... and I always thought that was the uniform ... but seriously, we are again running a charity match "The George Walker Memorial Trophy" on Tuesday 3rd May, featuring young teams from City Youth with a view to funds raised at that game going to the Neurosurgical Educational Fund, which is headed (no pun intended) by the surgeon who opperated on Jake in Leeds. I will supply exact details when I know more as we have only just had the whole event approved.

I will be chasing for willing sponsors etc so be warned ...I will be in touch.
