Brian Luckhurst

Recommended Posts

I know its not football related, but sad to hear of the death of one half of one of the best opening pairs Kent ever had in recent times.

I grew up watching Luckhurst & Denness - a superb partnership - and once met him when he came to our school. He was a thoroughly nice guy.

Rest in Peace, Brian.

Met him a lot at the Sports centre in Canterbury . He was always humble and had loads of time for everybody . I d like to imagine that sportsman who achieve less from more natural talent would be the same but i doubt it . He summed up a lot of sportsman of the past who squeezed as much as they could from what they had to achive what they did.

Still got an autographed Graham Johnson benefit bat. I bored Graham him for about 30 minutes on spin bowling. He was genuinely intersted in offering advice.

That was the best Kent team ever - 6 England payers, 1 Pakistani, 1 West Indian.

THe rest should have been internationals.

Gentlemen one and all.

I remember Brian and other Kent first team players visiting the Rec that used to exist behind Northfleet railway station back in the 60s for a friendly. I got several autographs including Brians. One other was Alan Brown who played for the Fleet and KCCC. Brian's autobiography was published only last year shortly after becoming President of KCCC. Sadly missed. kmj.

I had the honour of meeting Brian at one of the Canterbury Floodlight games last year - what a gentleman, had time for everybody. Even asked me about my "Gladwish Land Sales" shirt. Also remember when after a few years absence be was recalled to the England lineup when they had batting problems in 1972. RIP

No wonder I fell in love with cricket during that era.
And what a brilliant side this was many of them made up the backbone of the england test team. Also recall Bernhard Julien.James graham-Brown,Colin cowdrey. who were also around at that time. Saw them at maidstone in the john player sunday league a few times.
