TONIGHT IS OFF - STFC v Hendon

Emma-STFC

There will never be a perfect solution. Had Roy answered the phone and told people that there was a danger of the match being postponed but then was given the all clear, the people being told it was called off could have made the decision not to travel and then be equally disgruntled at being given false information.

When I left work at 5.30 on tuesday it was raining lightly, but when I got home about 5.45 it was falling much harder. I looked outside my window about 6.15 and felt the game was in danger and so the text coming through at 6.30 from several sources came as no surprise. The first thing I did on hearing the news was to go to the forum to start a thread saying the match was called off. Emma had already done that so I made the post sticky so that people who checked the forum would see it. I then phoned Martin and Chris P. Lettuce to make sure that they had heard the news and so not to travel. I'm sure that upon hearing that the match has been called off, other supporters rang other suppoirters to spread the news. It is perhaps not a very sophisticated method for spreading the word but then TalkSport and Five Live aren't likely to announce our postponements.

I've heard the website being mentioned a few times as a possible way of alerting people that the game was postponed. Well, Gary was already at the ground and so not in a position to do so, and I imagine that Chris like the rest of us, was doing the usual post work/pre evening kick off things liker eating and getting reading to go to the game. The website is a good source of information but I think it is a little unrealistic to expect it to be updated on a reactionary basis.

We have had the relatively good fortune of not having too many games called off at late notice in the last few seasons. This year we have has the disappointment of the Boxing Day feature (which only the ref would have thought to cancel) and now the Hendon game. Last season the Bracknell B&B game was called off at the very last minute but that was unavoidable due to a very sudden downpour. The season before the away trip to Wivenhoe comes to mind though I've no complaints about that.

To the supporters who feel that had a wasted journey, I'm sorry that it happened but sometimes these things do happen and are not always avoidable. Andrew, from reading your post I don't think you misled anybody. You made it quite clear that you spoke to Roy at 5.45 and that is was wet but going ahead. At that time I suspect that was true. You then added a comment about Worthing from last season, which as anybody who went to that game will testify, should not have been played. Now, a lot can happen in two hours. Indeed a sustained period of heavy rainfall could have happened or the fog come down on Stag Meadow as has been known to happen in the past. Your message was a snapshot if you like from that moment on Tuesday night, that at 5.45 the game was on. At 6.30 the game was called off. All things are relative.

Anyway, I digress. It was disappointing for the match to be postponed and even more so for those who had already left for the ground. Unfortunately games being called off is part of football and although I have sympathies for those who feel aggrieved at what they see as mis-information, I'm not sure that too much more could have been done. Perhaps Roy could have manned the phones for longer, but then I suspect he was in discussion with the match officials about the pitch, talking to the Hendon representatives and all of the other things he has to do as part of matchday responsibilities. However, things can change at short notice and this is one of those rare occasions when something of this kind has affected Slough Town Football Club.

Gary-

any news on speaking to roy/the club regarding this?

handbags aside.... if the idea becomes more popular and you would like to have another person using their time and money to let others know i'd be more than happy to help (since i have a very nice provider who gives me free sms)

perhaps a scheme could be set up whereby each main contact could text their own group...saving resources and time?

just a thought

Wasn't this Stockport County one was it?

We Will Survive

(tune: Gg - I Will Survive )

At first we was afraid

We was petrified

Us County Fans were scared, we had Palmer leading our side

We spent so many nights thinking that we would go down

We have Beckett

So now the ball just hits the net

And now we're back

To winning ways

Leaving other teams behind with that sad look upon their face

We've got Alby playing great

Daly right by his side

Gibb crosses the ball while young Clare keeps them denied

Well now go, walk out the door!

Join the County fans, cos we're ready to win more

Though some say that we're no good

Though some say that we all dive

We won't crumble

Keep the County spirit alive!

No, not we!

We will survive!

For as long as we've got Hollins here we'll be the best alive

We've got all the year to win

We've got Beckett to score goals

We will survive

WE WILL SURVIVE!

Hey, hey!

umm no...its slightly more risque than that and a bit mor to do with slagging men off....generally in the lack of appendage area... but that version is pretty good!
