going by optimistic's logic, having beaten Walsall means we should be in League One, right? Like Martin said in an earlier post, these people think we should win every game 10-0 without letting the opposition get a single touch. Not going to happen I'm afraid so I suggest they really do go watch someone else

You really must learn to understand what you read,I believe what is actually meant is that we should be nearer the top of our league not division 1( how absurb)if we can beat teams of a much higher standard in the cups.

Who here thiks that we will be able to beat Walsall every week, and be top of the league just because we beat them once????

Anon, teams often raise there game for the biggest game of the season (as in our case, the Walsall game). These sorts of games only come once of twice every several years, they don't come often, just because we beat them one DOES NOT MEAN we should be top of our league JUST BECAUSE we beat ONE TEAM 4 leagues above us, with the teams best performance of the season.

Chances are, if we were to play Walsall/Gravesend next week, we would be stuffed beyond belief.

Another interesting point in all this is players still see the name of Slough Town FC and see a scalp. We're still considered, by some, to be a big name in this division, and thanks to our healthy support home and away, teams can and will often raise their game against us.

Having said that, it's up to us to perform on a consistently good level on the pitch to the standards which we've set ourselves. We've seen how good we are one week, then nowhere near as good the next. Let's hope we can get that consistent run as we did around this time last year.

I would agree with that Gary, when you were promoted, you had a F.A.Cup history about you, from years gone by, you came in the division, with a reputation.

Agree also that any team can raise there game for the Cup, but you have to do it, over the season, I admire your club, you have a terrific bunch of Supporters, play away from home for home games and get bigger gates than the landlords.

I just think, all the success of the cup runs has caught up with you, regarding the league, good luck for the rest of the season.

If (and I grant you it is quite a big if) we win our games in hand. We will be seventh and challenging for a play-off. Start living up to your pseudonom and be optimistic and support the team and see what the remainder of the season has to bring.

Gary makes a good point. It is often difficult for teams playing below what is perceived to be their 'natural' level not only in cups but in the League. Look at Sheff Wed, playing in a rubbish 3rd division with 20,000 crowds at home and taking over places they visit. Yet they have stuggled because every game is a 'cup game' for the opposition. Same with QPR. Got out of that division by the skin of their teeth last year. Could not win at places like Rushton and Chesterfireld. This year with the same players they are 6 points off the play-offs for the prem. Why, because now they are not under the same sort of pressure at Ipswich and West Ham they were at Swansea and Huddersfield. Same for Slough.

I think we may have an overinflated opinion of ourselves. Whilst we take good away support at this level and that my inspire the opposition I don't think we can really be considered a "name" in non-league football. You look at the Conference now and it is a very different league to the one we were in.

FA Cup shock this year I think re-instated it. Look at how much it meant to Croydon last year when they won at their place. I still think that factors across our current division a bit and works against us.

That said, it certainly is there in a lot of fans who seem to think all we have to do is turn up to win. Let's get behind the lads especially when things are going well.

Martin, its interesting you bring up the point about the overinflated ego now, as that same topic popped into my head when I was reading Gary's previous thread about the best and worst away fans on the Ryman League forum. What I read on there made me believe that we have now got over this opinion as opposition fans no longer feel that attitude from us. I remember reading a similar poll a couple of years ago and we were sometimes mentioned in the worst fans because of our overinflated opinions. Hopefully, most fans are now realising that a LOT of work will have to be done to ever get back to that level.

I think the majority of us have faced up to the fact that we are not a big non-league club although others (who tend to be unregistered users of this forum) don't seem to have cottoned on.

I think its been a great season, but then i am a bit of a cup junkie. I also judge the game on the whole day out, and at places like Gravesend despite the rain and defeat, had a really good laugh before and during the game.

If we manage to squeeze into the play offs as well, then great, if not, then i'll not be slitting my wrists.

I still think Slough are a biggish non league club, and that the town is a football town whereas places like Chesthunt aren't. We've just one small problem thats seriously holding up our progress, and it ain't anonymous postings.

As for Slough supporters, i reckon we have lost that chip on our shoulder, in no small part because some people - without naming names - have moved away/stopped coming so the abuse behind the goal isn't as crude as it used to be.

i'd agree with BR, i too am a bit of a cup junkie and judge a match on the whole day's experience....

as for whether we are a big nonleague club i think our recent cup runs have added susstantially to our noteriety (although perhaps thats not the exact right word to use) as far more of my mates up at uni know who's coming to play for us and look out for our results every saturday... although they could just be doing that to please me...
