Sixties Nostalgia

I think you must be referring to Brown's first spell with the 'Fleet. I remember him being signed in the Stan Aldous era (correct me if I'm wrong) in '68. He was well past his best but scored the odd goal in a few appearences in Southern One. His earlier era you refer to was before my time.

Glad the bits on my site were of interest - Jimmy Fletcher (mentioned above) is another player there.

As I mentioned before, could anybody shed a bit more light on Micky Moore's time with you - when he signed, when he left and where to if possible ?

Didn't know about Alan Brown having a second spell with you - was it just briefly during 68/69 as mentioned ?

Sounds like the jubilee book would be a goldmine of info for players featured on my site - any idea if Gravesend library might have a copy I could borrow or does anybody fancy lending it to me / copying the pages for Fleet / Margate players ? Bit of a big ask I know but I could easily give you a list of names - Vic Pain, Andy Coghill, John Williams and Garry Aldous have all just sprung to mind for starters !

Does the book have info like player dates of birth ? Even those would be really useful, especially for the likes of Brian Hughes who played 400 games for Margate.

Hope somebody can help me out.

Cheers !

Jeff

I was sorting out some old programmes and I found a farewell tribute to Johnny Sanchez, who was emigrating to Melbourne,it was a supplement in the Sunderland prog.dated 11-2-63.He was a half back with plenty of style, and very well liked by the players and supporters.Have we seen the best or is the best yet to come I realy hope so.

I can remember my Dad taking me to Stonebridge Road when we first moved down from London in the 60's.

Brian Hughes used to lean on the fence and chat to the fans when play was at the other end of the pitch. Very civilised.

Years ago a mate of mine told me that Hughes nicked his sweets of him during a game when he wwas a kid! probably when he was leaning on the barrier. Is he still around? think he lived nearby.

I can vividly remember one of the oddest decisions I have ever witnessed in football which, by coincidence, involved Brian Hughes. It was an evening game, but I do not recall who the opposition were although it was probably a Kent Floodlight Cup match. Hughes ran out of his area and kicked the ball out of play. It hit the perimeter wall on the Stonebridge Road side of the ground beyond the covered area ( ie closer to the Swanscombe end which was where the Fleet goal was ). To everyones surprise ( not least Brian ), the referee signalled to play on and so he hoofed it up field! This was despite it having clearly gone out of play and bounced back onto the pitch! Whether he had thought that a player had passed it back to Hughes (no one was actually there )

or he just couldn't be bothered to order a throw in I will never know. It was totally bizarre! Happy days! kmj
