Could be the old Uralite site?.

They could never get enough people to work there because it was so isolated out on the marshes.
Nobody lives there, there are hardly any roads, I think most of that land is a protected wildlife habitat.....why on earth would anyone even think of building a 20,000 seat football stadium there <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

There are now three Thameside RSPB reserves between Gravesend and Cliffe. The RSPB have the ability to mount very effective and determined opposition to anyone with plans to damage or adversely affect their reserves which are often of national importance. Having taken on the Government over the plan to build an airport at Cliffe, I am sure that they would be more than a match for Gillingham FC should any plans they might have threaten the marshes. kmj.

Slight problem with that, the government never had any plans to build an airport at Cliffe, their plan was always to extend Stansted but they needed a red herring to get the tree huggers off their backs. The same people who would have been protesting outside Stansted are now sitting in pubs, drinking real ale, sucking their pipes and congratulating themselves for "beating the government" on this one.

The reason Scally won't build a football stadium on the British Uralite site is much simpler, he has no plans to build a football stadium....his plans are for a football stadium, a casino, a hospital and thousands of houses.

Why would he build that in the middle of a marsh?

The point I was making is that the RSPB have the financial clout to mount a campaign both in and out of the Courts should the unlikely happen in the Gravesend/Higham marsh area. Although your comment about Cliffe never being a true target for a new airport may be accurate, the plans still had to be fought to prevent losing out by default. I didn't raise this as a possible location for Scally's stadium . I was merely reacting to the suggestion that it was being earmarked. I would comment that given the ever increasing risk of flooding and global warming in general, building any thing on a low laying marshland would be sheer folly. Perhaps that is what the stadium could be called- Scally's Folly! kmj.
