Today's Game

As I said on your forum, the ref was being fooled nearly everytime number 7 fell over. And 6 was lucky to stay on after his lunge and then attempt to hit/strangle our player!

edit: not number seven, I got confused there, because I thought it was number 7 during the whole game lol. Dunno what number he was now!

Will try something new now with My Player Ratings
Wilkerson 6 - Kicking at times not great, and could have done a little better with the second goal.
Protheroe 7 - Got forward well, and some important tackles.
Mccarthy 8 - Won everything in the air, looked calm on the ball and handled everything.
Gledhill 7 - Looked comfortable, nothing special but solid.
Drury 6 - Ideas were there but they didn't come off all the time.
Lovell 7 - Didn't quite work for him going forward, some bad crosses, but some good defensive work when it was needed.
Saunders 8 - Yet another great peformance and another important goal.
Mckimm 7 - Good game from the captain, looked calm and played the ball around neatly at times.
Essandoh 7 - Looked certain to score, missed and crashed into the post, hopefully will be alrite.
Omoyinmi 7 - Took his chance well, but at times looked quiet.
Pinnock 6 - Disappointed really, I would of expected more, didn't have too much of an impact on the game when he arrived.

Didn't play enough to be rated: Porter and Sidibe

What about skinner?

I'd give:
Wilko - 6
proths - 8
Skinner - 7
McCarthy - 8
Gledhill - 7
Lovell - 7
Drury - 6
Mckimm - 7
Saunders - 8
Omoyinmi - 7
Essandoh - 7
Pinnock - 7

Thought you were harsh on Pinns, his holding up of the ball was once again excellent and was unlucky with one or two shots. Saying that, with both him and Manny up front we don't look nowhere near as threatening in attack as when we do with Roy there.

I have to say it was a solid performance today from the boys, especially in the second half when we never really looked like conceding after we'd made it 3-2. However, if we play against Scarborough like we did towards the end of the first half, we will struggle to get a grip on the game.

On the positive side, McCarthy, McKimm and Saunders had excellent games. On the negative side, Wilko was at fault positioning-wise for both of their goals and Drury had a bit of a shocker, not using the ball well enough (such as his dribbling to the wing when there's space in the middle and his lack of inspiration on a breakaway early in the second half), whilst Pinnock was appalling and could have been sent off for his headlock in the second half.Indeed, the lack of bookings today surprised me somewhat, with tackles from behind and the fracas going unpunished.

Great to go through to the next round, and to see a bit of Fleet history today! Let's just hope we get another favourable (home) tie next round, preferably Canvey or Eastwood or someone rubbish like that

Good point Gary, it will be very interesting to see how many we get, if that is the draw. Having seen dwindling support so far in this competition, a tie against our 'rivals' might stir the absentees to come along. However, surely we can't get another home tie after three already? Even Arsenal aren't THAT lucky...

P.S. Is it a two-legged affair in the Semi-finals, should we get there?

Thought you were the better team, but if the Ref had given us half the decisions he should have done I felt we would have won.

The odd thing was I thought the ref had a reasonable game.
There wasn't really a bad tackle all afternoon, and the melee was simply handbags.
If it had been one of our more infamous Conference refs there would have been 8 yellows, 4 reds and 2 in front of the firing squad!!

what was the attendance today please?

973

I think not. Wasn't it 963? Or was the tannoy announcing up to its usual standards?

Yeah sorry it was that I knew it was one of them and when I couldn't decide I just chose the higher one.

And in response to your other question, yes I believe it is two legged in the semi's. Lets concentrate on the quaters first though.

I don't want to do a "Fleetbabe" but still.....

I can't believe that some of you people were at the same game as me.

How can Lee Gledhill, thump every ball at the corner flag whether there is anyone there or not, score higher than Andy Drury, most skilfull player on the pitch and set up Pinnock (who cocked up) and Manny(for the winner)

McCarthy was better than he has been but he was still found glaringly wanting with a simple ball over the top in the first half, if their forward had finished better it would have been a carbon copy of the Histon goal.

Jukebox,Manny,Jay and Proths looked a class above Slough. Skins was unusually quiet, Lovell showed a lot of energy and popped up all over the place although his final ball/ludicrous shots left a lot to be desired. Macca was solid but the rest were pretty average.

We won again, well done Liam. Excellent start.

come on lads...the way you won against a team 6 places above the relegation zone in 2 division below you !!

Slough were a credit and were much a down fall to themselves...2 mistakes at the back...

No one comented much about your number 22 making a deliberate handball in the penalty area !

he gained an advantage over the slough number 2 , and today he got away with it....

for a team from the ryman league ...playing away from home against a conference team..had you going at times...and the score line was close, because we played well and we are a good cup fighting team !!!.

.....You just shaded it....but for a team 2 divisons below you we nearly got a draw....

and as your manager quoted in the interview...

He does not want any hard matches like that one..speaks volumes for Slough Town...

anyhow, no hard feeling good luck in the next round....hope to see you at Villa park for the final...some of us will be there too !!

Up the Rebels.....

Agreed Chris, that Slough can take a lot of credit from that game - you looked better than Histon who we played in the last round, and even when 2-1 up you still pressed forward rather than sit on the lead. And as you say, the gulf in class didn't look like two divisions.

That said, I thought you weren't that creative in the final third of the field and your two goals apart, I don't think we were all that stretched even though we were probably fortunate in the end to win it, although we did create quite a few chances.

For us, thought Saunders as usual saved the day, McCarthy had a good game, Drury had an off-day and was pleased to see Lovell chasing every ball that he lost - which was one too many given some of his wayward passing!

I agree with you , Stu M, regarding Slough's play in the final third - I believe they actually only had 4 shots on goal all game - the 2 goals, the mix up immediately after Gleds replaced Porter, and one other long range drive in the first half that Wilko made a good save from.

Both the goals should have been prevented - we gave the ball away in midfield for the first, and simply didnt close the man down (although it was a cracking shot) and the defence (in particular, Wilko) fell asleep from the free kick, although Pinnock did his best to block the shot.

Slough are not as bad as their current league position suggests anyway - after all, they do have games in hand, which if won, would see them not far off a play off spot (a tough task to win 5 games in hand, I know, but still a fact).

I doubt their manager will have been very pleased though, with the ease with which Manny shrugged off the defender for the winner - Drury's ball didnt have quite enough weight on it, and the defender should have had the ball (to use a well worn phrase) in row Z.Despite being twice Manny's size, though, he somehow allowed Manny to outmuscle him.

What I didnt like was some of the apparent showboating that went on when we were 3-2 up. Its fine keeping possession (which makes a change for us), but some of it was over elaborate.

If we had been sharper in front of goal, and we hadnt gone to sleep for their second goal, it could have been a more convincing victory.

Thought Saunders was immense again today and Lovell does look much improved now, albeit that he needs to sharpen up on his distribution. One tackle he made in the second half on the edge of our area epitomised his improved play.

While others praise Protheroe, it seems more often than not, that 80% of his balls into the box are poor (witness in particular that free kick in the second half that he landed perfectly in the keepers arms), but equally that he always comes up with the odd one or two perfect balls, such as that for Jay's goal today.

Our game is slowly coming together again, and today makes it 5 games unbeaten, including 4 victories - ok, so 2 of those were FA Trophy games against lower opposition, and a third was the Kent Senior Cup against Tonbridge, but we are gradually getting there.

And whilst we comment that "we only just won the game today", lets not forget that its easy to "come a cropper" in these games - Canvey being held at home by Bishops Stortford, and Hereford being held at Eastwood Town (3 leagues below them) being cases in point - and accept that we're through, which is all that really matters at the end of the day.
