Slough Town 1-1 Hornchurch

Result doesn't really reflect the game. The Rebels enjoyed a lot of possession without creating much, but the 59th minute strike from Sammy Winston was well worth the wait.

Christian Metcalfe was sent off on his debut for two yellow cards and Horcnchurch equlaised through Danny Benstock in the last minute with a well hit volley.

Full report and pictures will be online shortly.

Well...whatever you think of the squad, at last we watched a game full of committed players which, given the conditions, was thoroughly enjoyable. What else do we go to a match for ?............. Glad I came back, and if the season continues with games like these, so will I

Dean Palmer - comfortable at the back, better going forward.

Zeph - Thought he had a comfortable game. Couldn't do anything about the goal, and dealt with everything else that came at him well.

Deaner - Did OK. Should have scored at least two today.

Adrian Browne? Not yet. Liam Patrick, yes. He's looked a class above.

Winston should have done enough now to earn a start alongside Hale, but how long will it take for Deaner NOT to start?

Hornchurch were well pleased with the result, which was a disappointment in some ways for us. We had more possession, but didn't test their keeper much. Deaner tries hard, but even at this level is out of his depth--a squad player maybe, but to start ahead of the pacey Hale (sorry) and Winston is ludicrous--someone please tell me they were carrying an injury etc as another season of Deaner being selected bcos his dad pays the bills is too much to contemplate. Not a lot of skill in the Hornchurch side, and this was a result for them not us. Its just occured to me that unless we finish in the top half of the league, we will have acheived the equivelant of relegation, perhaps that would be enough to make Browne walk. Too early to worry yet, but we can't carry someone who isn't up to it. A plus was that the whole team tried, and that has to be a good starting point.

Gary help me out here please which one today was Liam Patrick-I thought the announcer of the teams said the only change was at number 8 and his name was Spencer?

Having said that I have to agree on most of your assessment,Dean Palmer loked better in the second half when he was going forward, same can be said for Paul Reed, didn't think that Hornchurch had enough forwards to be able to judge Rickey Brown(but would say for a centre-half he was not very good at winning headers)Haki was excellent again and I liked the liik of Metcalf, also Gilkes looked interested for the whole game, and in fact he should be too good for this league(when he's trying).Deaner is not up to it-okay he tries and puts himself about, but he can't even trap a ball and lay it off.Certainly Winstone and Hale should start before Deaner and Boot?Boot for all his effort is too slight in stature, time and time again he was eased of the ball-to me bBoot,Deaner and the NO.8 did not contribute to the game at all-but its all about opinion at the end of the day.

Haven't posted over the summer so where better to start again that today's game and i have to agree with Football fan . I was a bit dubious about today but it's quite encouraging but my only concern is that Sammy should have started and not just because of his goal . If the team can put that effort in all season I'll be happy . All I want is the club to be put on a sound footing whether with Deaner or not . By dropping the wage bill and bringing in a committed squad is a good start .We may have 'only' played Hornchurch today , but it's better than nowt .

Thought todays game had some encouraging points but yet again we are subjected to certain things that we have to complain about year in, year out. Deaner, why is he starting when there are two proven strikers at this level on the bench. Refereeing, diabolical today. Both Jones and their number 11 (the scorer) could have been sent off, Jones definately should and Hale was definately brought down in the area near the end. Also when will we stop conceding late goals? It seems to be a trait of Slough's for as long as I've watched them. O.K. we were down to 10 men by that point but still. Agree with Matt C that Adrian should have played ahead of Rickey Browne and agree with Rebel Striker that Boot looked too much of a pushover. However, this was the first game so I shall reserve judgment for a while longer. Best player in my opinion was Gilkes, followed closely by Palmer (especially when going forward) and Hakki (please let him be available for the whole season!). Midfield looked more effective at times than last year, giving more support to the front men, and Metcalfe seems like a man who will gee up the team as he was always talking to the others and trying to get them involved. My final point is that once again Steve Daly proved himself to be a top defender at this level. Even when up against a man who has played Premiership football in his time (and not that long ago) he stood up to him brilliantly and effectively played him out of the game. Inspirational captain and a fine player, one that we cannot afford to lose at any cost!

I was disapointed we couldn't hold on to the 1-0 lead and yet again like so many times we concede in the dying moments. But on the plus side, i was happy with the performance and commitment, especially in that heat. We played many good moves and touches, I agree with others who said Winston and Hale should be first choice strikers and not Deaner and Boot. I think if they can keep that standard of play going, we will be in for a good season ON THE FIELD, lets just hope that with a reduced, cheaper squad we wont hear of any more cash problems during the season.

I think the squad that we have assembled doesn't look too bad. I was impressed with dean palmer and paul reed at the wing backs and steve daly in the middle and i think when howard returns the back four will be one of the best around. Midfield wasn't bad either, Gilkes looked really sharp and created allot for us and veli is the one player we cant afford to lose. Upfront i thought boot didnt work with deaner but he may do with another striker his style just didnt fit with deaner (who's does!!) but it was obvious that Hale and winston were far better when they came on. I was dissapointed with the score line because we should have converted more of our many chances so the last minute goal wouldn't have mattered. The one position that we still lack is a goalkeeper, i dont mind dominique but allot of people feel shakey with him at the back behind a good defence. Anyway I'm not too worryed about our new squad.

Well said younger rebel. I was impressed with the overall performance although the result was very disappointing given our better chances and domination. When you consider that only Zeph, Daly, Gilkes, Veli played regularly last season I thought we had a good spirit and level of commitment. A shame Metcalf got sent off because he had been very vocal on the pitch and seems a natural leader. I think Palmer should move into midfield when Ant is fit in place of Spencer and Hale and Winston should start (as we have all spotted). Our first XI would then seem strong and should do well. Let's back the boys and the club back-biting at Deaner will not help - no-one else would take us on and throw money away.
