As mentioned on the registered topic thread - some anons have something to say, some clearly don't (that lame twit from Gillingham being a prime example).

So is it not possible to simply delete an annoying person's post every time he makes one? I know it means extra work for mods, but maybe some people could volunteer for being mods (I might well do when I get registered finally!)

Then the attention-seeking little nancies that post garbage won't be bothered if no-one can see or reply to their inane ramblings.

Not at all. Registration gives the moderators a few more details than anon postings, and are (usually) a sign of a genuine fan.

This is an open forum to all supporters, but on a serious note, Gravesend Gill, why do you chose Gillingham rather than the Fleet?

Before you ask why I support Fleet but live in Gillingham, lived in Gravesend for the first 25 years of my life and started following Fleet in 1967.

It would make an interesting (and hopefully) intelligent discussion on why fans choose NOT to support the local team.

Chatham Gary, dunno where to start really fella. Been going to see Gillingham since the late 1980's when I was about 16 or so. A group of about ten of us used to travel from Gravesend to watch them play. Don’t know what made us choose Gillingham really as we were awful in those days – very close to being relegated to the GM Vauxhall Conference, although the games against Maidstone United were excellent. Like you I think we lack a team we can genuinely call our local rivals, the fans have latched onto our rivalries with Millwall and Fulham but they’re not the same.

I’ve been to Gravesend quite a few times in the last few years, although I certainly wouldn’t class myself as a Gravesend supporter. I honestly couldn’t say why I choose Gills over Fleet. I know a few of you will obviously disagree, but I’d actually been to see Fleet play before Gills, but didn’t feel as at home there. Seemed to be an old mans team at the time – Gillingham had a few more supporters my age as well as in my opinion a better terrace atmosphere.

Good answer, I feel a good debate starting.

We are actually no longer an old mans team. The cloth cap brigade on the halfway line have been replaced by the famous "halfway liners", lots of noise, trying to outchant those around "drummer boy".

I have been to see Gills myself a couple of times 8-2 and 10-0 believe it or not, but like you, I just didn't feel at home.

If you were to get a decent chairman with real football ambition, dedicated to a new stadium in Medway (and contrary to what Scally says, there ARE sites available), I would probably take more than a passing interest as well.

Thats the most intelligent thing you've ever said. See there you seem a genuine nice guy, why not stay like that?

…and with regards to local supporters not following there local team, to be honest Gary I wouldn’t class them as true football supporters in the first place.

I have far more respect for Fleet fans than a plastic Man United or Arsenal fan that only gets to watch his team on Sky.

I’ve done the shitty away’s Crewe, Wrexham, Rotherham and all that, as anyone who actually bothers ‘following’ their team will know it’s a right laugh getting a coach to some northern ground, even if there’s only a few of you – beats Sky sports any day of the week. Travelling up early morning, stopping at service stations, bumping into fellow supporters from your team, having a beer in out the way pubs, getting that late equaliser when your toes are freezing or snatching a late winner when there are only 100 of you celebrating it.

For what it’s worth I think the armchair football fan is modern phenomenon anyway. They only do it because a generation of supporters have not been able to go week in week out and therefore not built up a relationship with fellow supporters in the way that we did. They don’t know what there missing out on since they never did it in the first place.
