4-4-2 after Saturday's showing does clearly not work as we were a shambles at the back. Now it seems clear to me that Chopper can't play left-wing so anyone got any bright ideas?

 

Only one I can think of is to sign a left-wing-back by Saturday!!

Well, if you take Mike Murphy out of the back three, you're left with two defenders (Sauls & Daly) + 1 which looks severely short of pace (as was highlighted time and time again on Saturday), but then we've not got another left sided player in the squad at the moment with Steer injured. Nor do we have another centre back to replace Murphy should he move across.

 

Not a nice predicament to be in unfortunately.

Highly amusing that the 4-4-2 that everyone has been craving is deemed a disaster after one result! I still believe we don't have the squad to play 4-4-2 at present.

 

I noticed our best period on Saturday came when we were forced to play the ball about through the middle with Veli running at people due to the lack of Mullet on the left who we were maybe over reliant upon.

 

I think Saturday was as much to do with individual errors as the formation.

obviously with mike murphy and carbon as wingbacks

(i had the formation proper in the preview!)

 

obviously unsure on current state of those players (injuries, suspensions etc)

i know it puts hodges out of position but if we want to play that kind of formation its a sacrifice we'd have to make, murphy and seedel can do well enough up front, if we get desperate we can play hodges up front in a 4-3-3 formation (with mike murphy and carbon dropping to left and right backs repectively)

i think both these cup games are important and wouldnt rest players, although obviously the fa trophy is the main one i cant see us getting past the quarters wheras i think we can win this cup.

looking at the formation we played last night (quite close to what i predicted) i think that was probably our strongest team (maybe metcalfe when he returns), and should stay like that until we can find players to fill the holes, mike murphy did well at left wing back, and hodgey did well in the centre of the defence
