£8m ground plan saves Margate

By Nicholas Harling

MARGATE breathed a huge sigh of relief this week with the news that their future seems assured, at least until the start of next season.

The Conference South club were in grave danger of folding until the decision of developers CNC Properties to finance the £8 million renovation of Hartsdown Park themselves. With work not expected to start until late next month, Margate still face a race against time to have their ground fit enough to meet Conference grading requirements by Aug 6, the beginning of the next campaign.

"We are running out of time," admitted club president Gordon Wallis yesterday, "and this is a gamble, but itindicates the developers' confidence that the scheme is viable."

The club have been involved in lengthy negotiations with Thanet District Council over the development of Hartsdown Park which will include a hotel complete with conference and banqueting facilities, a medical centre and 10 five-aside football pitches.

While the council have prevaricated, Margate have staged home games at Dover and Ashford where a crowd of just 133, their lowest of the season, watched them on Tuesday. The absentees missed a 2-0 victory over Maidenhead United, Margate's fourth win in their last five games which has revived hopes of reaching the play-offs.
