There is plenty of talk about using technology to determine if a ball was over a line etc, but technology can also serve us in another more day to day way. Taking our recent "Callum Foley" experience as a prompt, how is this for an idea.

The League or County FA or whoever develop a piece of software, lets call it "playadata" for now. At the start of the season, all teams access playadata on line to register their players. Playadata will also be able to provide other details for contract players such as contract expiry date. If more that one club try to register the same player, it will block the attempt and a query will be automatically raised and sent to the league committee to investigate.

Then the games commence and at the end of each game the ref accesses Playadata on line and clicks against the players who played in the game. There could also be a provision there for him to record red and yellow cards including a category violation code. He could also upload his report via the site. If a player he tries to click on is not registered, then again a query is triggered.

So as playadata builds it is forming a series of databases that can be used to generate reports in various forms. So come the day we play Enfield Town in the Lge Cup and our Secretary is away and somebody else wants to check if our proposed team is legit, they could do one of two things.

1)Have a facilty to put into playadata a "what if we put out this line up in this competition". It would search the records and say sorry Mr Foley played for Burnham in this comp already.

2)Call up the playing records for an indidual player and it will tell you all the games he has played, in what competitions, and for which clubs that season.

There are many other things it could potentially do including highlight players that are suspended. In terms of cost, not sure but it may be possible to write it on existing software such as excel or Access.

Something to think about anyway.
