But Austin revealed that the signing that broke the budget on Friday afternoon was one which did carry an element of risk, having never actually seen him play.

 

The boss explained: “Bertie was signing at two minutes to three and I didn’t even know the kid until half past two.

 

“I’d heard good things about him, agreed a deal on the phone with him and had to take a gamble. If it hadn’t been that we would have only had 15 players out there with the injuries we have got.

“Joining Farnborough was no big decision for me. The manager has got a very good playing career record and it’s good to work under people who have played the game at the highest level.

 

“I dropped out of League Two a couple of years ago to join Canvey Island and I dropped down too far. Now it’s a case of testing myself and making a step back up in the Conference because I know I can do it.

 

“All I can guarantee to the fans is that I will give 120 per cent every game, I will try my best to get on the end of things if it comes to me and if the chances come then I will take them.”

Give 120% frankly when I was him play for Heybridge at our gaff he gave about 20% if that and the only running he did all day was probably afterwards to get to the bank to cash his 500 quids worth of beer vouchers
