It was Decorum who posted the details on EU Legislation and he is a regular registered poster. He did say that at the bottom of his post.

Thank you Martin. I was reponding to a request from KOC and was only trying to help. Not worth it I guess.

Thanks BFR. I may not post often, but I only contribute when I think I have something useful to say. Some others here might try the same thing.

An 'all-foreign' 16 was inevitable. If not Arsenal, it would have been Chelsea or someone else. And as others have said, EU rules mean that not much can be done about it. The onus must continue to be on clubs nurturing English youth and making them as good as can be to reduce the need to buy from abroad.

Perhaps greater consideration should be given to the causes of the influx of foreign players. For every quality player like Henry, or van Nistelrooy there are five (or probably more) run of the mill players in the teams below the top level. As the EU gets bigger there is a greater influx of EU qualified average ability players who are prepared to accept a lower wage than the British equivalent. Given the choice of two players of equal ability the clubs will always go for the cheapest not the "Englishest". Recent changes to KOLPAK will do nothing to stop this trend

British expectations have been fuelled by TV money, and everybody has jumped on the bandwagon creating a payroll spiral, and clubs in huge debt. Football is an industry, but football clubs are not (with a few exceptions) businesses. Clubs will continue to try to buy success, with those failing to achieve promotion to the Premier TV gravyland getting deeper and deeper in debt. Clubs will therefore seek the best players at the lowest rate.

Clearly over time British players will have to face the fact that the TV driven pay bubble has burst, and accept realistic pay packets for a fair days work (sound of ironic laughter). At that time the playing field will become less uneven.

...........and by the way, can anyone remember the last all-British team to win the old Division 1 ........... clue, it was 1989 and they are called Arsenal...... how ironic!!!

I suppose in any job where the seniority level included a requirement to give or be given 6 months notice - this is not uncommon.

There is nothing stopping footballers changing jobs, only stopping them doing the same job for a different employer. I'm sure UEFA could not prevent Didier Drogba becoming a car mechanic any time he pleased!

It is nothing new either - often the Liverpool team of the eighties would have a line up with not a single English qualified player. Frankly I agree with Wenger's comment that he does not look at their passports when he picks the teams. Surely you just pick the best team for the job from the players available.

And the last time they tried this restrctive overseas player business, everyone started trying to charge stupid money for crap English players just because of their passport. That's one of the reasons why so many clubs went to buy overseas in the first place.

You can hardly call the Arsenal players mercenary foreigners as most have been here for several years.

What ..........where did that come from ?

the squad that beat Roma circa 1985 was Grobelaar, (only foreigner) Phil Neal, Lawrenson, Hansen, Kennedy , Sammy Lee, Whelan, Souness, Dalglish, Rush, Robinson !

Add Hansen, Lawrenson and Whelan to the list. They are as foreign as Grobelaar in the sense that they can't play for England. Is that not the whole point of this argument? Wenger picking a squad of 16 without an Englishman? Ring any bells Phil seeing as this is what caused you to start this thread in the first place. You mention the 'Jocks' at one point and being worried that we might end up like them - does that mean that we are not like them? Oh yes, because they are not English and therefore foreign, just like Hansen, Souness and Dalglish were Scottish when they played that game against Roma.

If you are going to start something based on weak argument, at least try to stay consistent. Otherwsie you will continue to look stupid.
