French tw*t Wenger & his foreign legion

In an open European employment market any employer is free to deploy his staff as they see fit. Certainly any EU nationality player is not 'foreign' according to legislation. Even if we do want to label non-British EU players as 'foreign', then (for example) Roy Keene or Damian Duff are as 'foreign' as Patrick Viera or Thierry Henry - but they never get any votes in the 'Best Foreign player in the Premiership' polls. But its nice to know that good old British prejudice and xenophobia is alive and well on this board.

Was listening to the radio last night, an Arsenal fan called in to complain about the lack of English players in the team, the presenter gave him the option of finishing in a Champions League spot with a team full of Europeans or mid table with English players, the gimp soon shut up.

Phil, I suppose Peter Reid signing Zoumana Camara, Lamine Sakho, Salomen Olembe, Didier Domi and Roque Junior at the start of last season was so that the English talent at Leeds could blossom??? Playing a match with 16 non-English players in the squad might not be everybodies cup of tea, but big deal. It was inevitably going to happen at some point. I'd be very surprised if UEFA get this ruling through at it appears to me to contravene EU freedom of movement because if you can suddenly have quotas on certain jobs then it will open up one hell of a can of worms

You have to realise that UEFA is a pan-european organisation based outside the EU in Switzerland. Footballers employed by British (and French, Italian, Spanish etc) companies are protected by the same EU employment laws that we all are. No self-appointed trade organisation can tell you how many French or Italian colleagues you can have, or can stop you working for a German or Spanish company if you wanted to (and if they wanted you).

EU employment law supercedes the authority of a trade organisation, which is all UEFA is. They could not enact any rules that contravened this law as that itself would be illegal.

Anyone who has a job or who aspires to one should be grateful that workers' organisations (after many years struggle) have secured these legal provisions which protect all our rights to seek work and derive income from the widest possible opportunities.

It was Decorum who posted the details on EU Legislation and he is a regular registered poster. He did say that at the bottom of his post.
