Haddow Signs For Eastleigh - Confirmed

Interesting to see on the Observer website that Alex partly cites the lack of structure at the club as a reason for leaving. Eastleigh certainly have a more secure future than ourselves at the moment. Add that to offering him silly money and I don't think anybody can begrudge Al for making the decision he has. Calling him Judas is extremely strong and rather unfair. Steve Thompson left Slough for Wycombe in the early 90s which was difficult to take at the time but I don't any sensible person could blame him for going there and have a few years as a pro following their promotion to the football league.

Agree BFR - you can't blame Alex, but its a pity since Eastleigh have money to throw away on silly wages, Slough got precisely zilch out of it, except problems.

Seems to me that players being able to leave with little or no notice, even if they are not on contract, is a bit unfair. I think they should have paid some compensation.

It does seem unfair Andrew but I am sure we have signed plenty of players in our time following seven day approaches. Basically if your not on contract you can move within a week. It all comes down to the total package offered. Clearly it was a tough decision for Alex (if he was truly in it for the money he would of left immediately the approach was made) but I fully support his decision and wish him all the best. I don't really begrudge Eastleigh either if you've got it flaunt it. Provided they are on a sound financial footing - good luck to them.

The notice comes in with the 7 day approach Andrew. I know it doesn't give much time to find a replacement but it is a bit of notice all the same. As for the financial side of things, if we are unable to get a player to sign a contract then we should have no complaints about him leaving for nothing. Plus if there was to be any compensation then we would have had to do the same any players we approach on the 7 day rule, which I would imagine would include Leigh Mason.

Good points from both Martin and BFR, and I accept we may have made use of it in the past, although I think Mason has played for us in the reserves side for some time, hadn't he, so it wasn't an out of the blue approach to his team?

I suppose the thing that leaves me uneasy with this is the shortness of the notice. Eastleigh were not in this position, but how would we feel if the Fleet had come in with a seven day approach for Alex to make sure they removed a player likely to cause them problems in advance of the FA Trophy tie? Using money to wreck an opponent is not unkown in business, where the financial gains may outweigh the initial outlay. Probably an argument for longer notice I guess.

And it will help Eastleigh's promotion bid and potentially hinder ours, so I suspect that is why many of us felt discomforted about him going to another team in the same league. But it is done now.

Maybe the other question one asks is about having key players not on contract. If a player is found who is really good, and is offered a contract but refuses to sign one, preferring to stay on seven day terms, that may have to be a source of suspicion in the future, and make sure there is good cover. I take Eddie's point he made at one stage about good players being hard to find, but I'm sure he will be tempted to be very wary in the future.

And obviously he didn't like the song.....

Good luck to him... i don't think any of us would have been able to turn down that offer, and when i spoke to him after the Walsall game it was obvious he was desperate to get back to full time football. Eastleigh, although in the same league as us, have given him a chance to give up his job if he wants and more or less play full time.

And as i said before, i was really impressed with the Eastleigh set up, they are going places and were a nice bunch of supporters as well - not often we get fed for free after a game (unless Mark buys me a packet of crisps).

I can understand his signing but I think some loyalty to Slough should have been shown, by deferring transfer until the end of the season. Or is he just another "grab-what-you-can player?"

Oh what a load of total [censored]! You dont know what you are talking about, if you wer offered a new job on roughly 4x the amount of money, would you turn around and say "no i cant let down my workmates" [****!!****] would you? So fair play to him, i personally think its a bad move as he should have gone to a higher team but now he can play PRO instead of working full time and bit-part playing, ..... and im done
