Canvey 2 2 Northwich

Ref: to your comments A Non E Mouse about the referee. It seems to me that in most of our conference games our players get clattered and banged about with little or no protection from the referees. I think this is just normal conference football and we have to learn to deal with it. It certainly seems to work for them as our players then flare up and get a caution or sent-off ( I seem to recall that happening a couple of times this season already)

Another point I'd like to raise about the crowds at Canvey, or lack of them. Does anybody agree that the childs entrance fee of £5 is too much, as is the £8 for students. I think this may be stopping some people bringing their kids and their friends along as it soon adds up .

I would have to agree with the comments about entrance fees, I don't get over Park Lane much, but what with family commitments and other entertainments, the thought of paying £16 to stand on a cold, windy terrace, then add in the program a couple of beers, cup of tea at half time and maybe a burger and thats £25+ spent just for me.

Now consider an alternative, I can take both my kids to a warm air conditioned cinema, buy them some popcorn, drinks etc and watch a film as a family and the cost will be about £22 for four of us!

I would love to get over and support the yellows more but just can't justify it at those prices.

Anon - didn't really say a great deal about the ref and to be fair the game certainly didn't start out looking like a dirty game - the odd dodgy challenge, but nothing major. It just seemed to fall apart in the last 20 minutes or so when players started to get over "involved". Until that point I didn't really take much notice of the officials. Jeff seemed livid on the radio and mentioned that they have to write a report at the end - but even he didn't seem convinced that it did any good - we just have to get on with it. What worries me is player attitude - Ollie got involved once and does seem to have a short fuse. If Dobbo ever gets a start it will be world war 3 - and probably over just as quick with a straight red <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Unfortunately, due to crowd size I think those that do attend games will subsidise those that don't. Jeff can't and probably won't subsidise the team to that extent and the car park is another source of income. It's a double edged sword. Someone asked me the other day how much it was to watch Canvey or a general Conference game and felt it wasn't that cheap when I told him. The club probably can't afford to lose revenue by reducing costs for kids and concessions, but like wise these are the future fans who you want to attract to the lane rather than allow them to bugger off to Roots Hall or Upton Park. It's a problem faced by all clubs at our level and I don't suppose there is a straight forward answer. I'm sure there are many fickled fans who looked out the window yesterday and thought "I ain't going to pay £16 (or whatever)and stand in the freezing cold watching a "potential" relegation battle". Building a new ground with better facilities and proper cover from the elements will help entice the odd floating fan but theres probably a whole lot more to getting people along to the Lane than just that.

Lots of really sensible comments on here today. Gate prices are too high - we must have lost 250 fans since last year. 100 kids at £1 is better than no kids at £5 isn't it ?

As for the team.......... it is obvious that Greggory can't hack it anymore, Kennedy is out of his depth and we need a new defence. Sterling is a disaster area. Noto looked good and I think the new striker had good movement and will be able to provide for Boylan.

Chenery should have gone for a worse tackle on Mayman about 5 mins before quaylegate, he is not a malicious player, it is good news that there is no broken bone. Good game at times yesterday, but if Duffy hadn't found his shooting boots you would never have been in the game.

Northwich Victoria Conference champions 2005/6!!!

So it was alright to near cripple Chenery then? because he made a bad tackle. The tackle on Chenery was one of worst I have ever seen and any other ref would have sent him off.

For the disgraceful way your team played in the last 20 minutes you deserve to go down. You should have gone down last year but there is no escape for you this time.

Northwich may have been a dirty team but the small band of supporters who followed them were a credit to their team. Spoke to a few in the bar before the game, generally nice people who got behind their team well and sung their hearts out for the majority of the match.

Good to see their new ground is sorted at long last. Shame their team wasn't a bit more classier.

Like this post.

Earlier post about kids going to SU, WHU, assume even more expensive there.

No hope!! Don't think so pal, NVFC are the leagues form team and only now has Stevie Burr GOT THE SQUAD HE WANTS WITH 3 TO JOIN US SOON. Yes we should have gone down last year but if you knew the full story you would alter your opinion. Our new ground would have been ready 18 mnths ago if the local authorites hadn't messed things up. The conference also changed their minds on ground criteria after we had sold the old ground and moved out!! We could have stayed and kept our full fan base, instead we were forced to move to witton and lost 40% of our fans therfore affecting finances big-time!! Good news is the Victori stadium is only weeks away anf the green army will be re-united. Good luck Canvey, hopefully see you next season at the VS.

I actually came on here with the intention of complaining about your stewards for ejecting our fan for swearing, but if he also abused Ben Chenery in the ambulance as well, I can only apologise to Ben and the club for the actions of this middle aged moron who should not be welcome at our club again.

Phil Old Boy - my comment about kids going to SU or WHU could have been put a little better myself.

Obviously more expensive to go to SU and WHU as a kid - what I meant was get kids interested in coming to the club at a younger age so once they have got older and have some form of income going to the Lane (or Waterside) will appeal to them. Otherwise once they have money to spend there is nothing stopping them being drawn to the bigger clubs to spend their money. Suppose its all down to which club can hook them first. Hopefully it will be their local club Canvey - but with high entrance prices this may not end up being the case.

Right - that should be as clear as mud now then.................

being at the seafront end with the northwich fans in the first half was quite an experience, rightfully so they were a happy bunch (god we were so poor and the less said about dom the better) but why oh why did they sing that bloody song naming all their players over and over and over again. it wasn't even good.

I thought Northwich looked good for the 1st 20 then dropped a little, once we scored they fell apart and although I don't like to say it I cant see them escaping relegation.

with the exception of a few fans that let them down in the second half (there were a few canvey fans that done the same) it will be a shame not to see nothwich next year, when hopefully we will know more about having a nice shinny new stadium too.

it was a terrible challenge on chenners, the stud marks by his knee show it wasn't just miss timed,
