Thurrock (0)1 Saints (1)2

Goddard 74

Walshe 23,77

With Gary Elphick still out injured, following last week's game against Bognor and Nick Roddis suspended, Colin Lippiatt opted for a 3-5-2 formation this afternoon against 4th in the league Thurrock with Seeby, Hooper and Martin the back three. In absolutely appalling conditions, Saints took control from the start and in the 23rd minute went ahead with a goal which will surely be a contender for goal of the season. It was started by Davis and following great interplay between Marwa, Walshe and Cousins, the latter slid a pass into the path of Walshe, who smashed the ball into the Thurrock goal. Ten minutes later Cousins upended Simon Martin in the area, whereupon Bastock stood his ground and saved brilliantly from Poole.

As the second half wore on, Thurrock came more into the game with the driving rain making things very difficult for both sides but in all this, City continued to play their passing game. On 74 minutes, from a free kick wide right, Thurrock equalised with a header from Richard Goddard with Bastock appearing to be clearly held back by Kandol but which went unnoticed by the referee. Undeterred, Saints pushed forward and 3 minutes later were awarded a free kick a few yards outside the area. Hann laid the kick into the path of Ben Walshe, who proceeded to drill an unstoppable shot low into the corner of the Thurrock goal to secure the victory.

A great display today by all the lads against one of the more physical teams in the league, with heroic performances from Bastock, Hooper, Martin, Davis and Walshe. Our away support seems to be improving game on game with somewhere in the region of 100 Saints fans in attendance today.

Team - Bastock; Seeby, Hooper, Martin; Hann, Davis, Marwa, Walshe (Zoricich), Cousins; Cornwall (Beech), Clarke.

Subs - Perks, Kavanagh.

Well done to all the lads and Colin Lippiatt.
