Canvey Game

What are people's views on the friendly (?) with Canvey - is it such a good idea ?

 

Without sounding too cynical, isn't it likely that Jeff " I AM all the pies" King will send out his thugs to do a number on our boys just before the begining of season ?

I don't think theres much chance of trouble on the pitch tomorrow , the relationship between the clubs seems quite good , hence the friendly fixture..

Don't think we'd be in for much deliberate bruising, but I'm sure Canvey will want to remind us that they were 'unlucky' and try to prove they're still the better team, so we could be in for a tough one.

Tomorrow should be a good game. Both clubs have strenghtened their squads since our last meeting and Jeff King has said in a local paper tonight that he genuinly wishes Gravesend well this season.

 

There should be a good crowd also and possibly some banter and maybe a bit of provoking if that is the right word by your lot.

 

I am sure it will be nothing like the Canvey/Dagenham ESC Final fixture of last pre-season and lets hope that after tomorrow it will only take a season for us to join you again.

Canvey have been unlucky to finish runners-up two years running and I for one would love to see them complete their hat-trick.

I quite agree, there were quite a few had reservations about this fixture so close to the start and it seems we were lucky enough to get away with just one more on the casualty list (Justin Skinner) and what can Matt Lee have done to warrant that sort of treatment in all three matche. Canvey obviously came to compete and win by almost any means possible but in the end skill and fitness overcame bluster and thuggery. Great result, thought we outplayed them sewcond half.We looked the stronger side with the new signings.Dont know about Jimmy playing inside prefer him out wide where he can do some real damage.Liked the little fella(cant spell his name.)who came on 2nd half,showed lovely touches, wot about that third goal?We look solid and i think we can ruffle a few feathersin the conference. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smilie_switch.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif" alt="" />

Again thought we looked good going forward, but still somewhat suspect at the back, particularly to the high ball into the box - both Canveys goals came from balls beyond the back post, won in the air - one going directly in & the other being scrambled in following a header into the 6 yard box. We really need that defensive height that Francis adds & I'm not sure where it comes from in his absence.

 

Tostao was certainly impressive in his spell on the pitch and apart from that wonderful jinking run which led to Liams second goal, put in several other pinpoint crosses.

 

We shouldnt forget Paul Wilkerson's contribution to that goal either - a swift and accurate throw out to the halfway line - just one instance today of good distribution from the back - something which I think Jamie still needs to work on perhaps.

 

Wilkerson also made several good saves, and as is said on another thread, he must be challenging Jamie extremely hard for the starting place next Saturday.

as a shots fan i wondered how mark bentley was getting on.By the way i think you will do well in the conference this season as i think winning your previous league so convincingly(i know canvey were close but no one else was anywhere near you) is always a good sign. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif" alt="" />

Hello Shots fan. Mark Bentley is starting to look the business. As for us

in the Conference, we need to replace the injured Duku PFQ !

 

If Canvey are the main title Contenders, Aldershot will be in the Conf.

next season !!. I know it was only a friendly but they looked worse than us at the back.

thanks very much for that . i visited gravesend on two occassions and look forward to doing so again . It was definitely one of the best non league grounds i've been to. Here's to our next game,hopefully in the conference 03-04. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif" alt="" />

Hello Shots fan, I agree with Lord Ball, if Canvey's display at the weekend is anything to go by you lot should walk into to the conference. Having only seen Mark Bently a couple of times in friendlies I was wondering what your view is on him ?
