Super squad

By Paul Wreyford

QPR star striker Paul Furlong will be returning to his roots this Sunday to help raise money for the tsunami disaster appeal.

Furlong, who began his career at Enfield, will be managing an Enfield Legends XI as they take on the current Enfield Town team. All profits go towards the appeal.

Furlong said: "I'm really looking forward to the occasion and seeing people that I haven't seen for a long time. I had some very good times there."

One of those good times included scoring a brace at Wembley in the FA Trophy final of 1988.

Furlong, who has played for a number of league clubs, said he was making his debut as a manager this weekend.

"I wanted to play but am not able to in case I get injured. I don't know how it's going to go, but it's all in a good cause."

He admitted he might be looking to go into coaching when his playing career ends and would not rule out even becoming a manager.

"If I can get a result on Sunday, who knows?" he joked.

The game, which has been arranged by Bryan Hammatt and Enfield Town FC, is being supported by ex-Town players stretching across four decades.

Players taking part in the game include members of the 1982 and 1988 FA Trophy winning sides, as well as Conference winners from 1983 and 1986.

Former goalkeeper Andy Pape, holder of the record number of appearances for the team, will be joined by the likes of Steve King and Keith Barrett. Dave Howell and Paul Harding, who both went on to successful league careers, are also in the squad.

Ciaran Glennon, Enfield Town press officer, said: "Add to that a number of stars from the Ryman Premier League days of the 1990s, many of whom are still playing, and you have a great mix of players.

"This should be a great day, as well as a brilliant opportunity to raise money for the charity. Many items of footballing memorabilia will also be auctioned during and after the game, and it is hoped as many people as possible come along to join in the fun.

"With face-painting for the children and a trip down memory lane for the adults, there will be something for everyone."

Sunday's match kicks off at 2pm.

The Enfield Legends' squad, at the time of going to press, consists of Andy Pape, Dave Howell, Steve Terry, Al-James Hannigan, Dave McDonald, Mickey Engwell, Keith Barrett, Robin Lewis, Erskine Smart, Dave Waite, Brian Sparrow, Curtis Warmington, Keith Hazelden, David Jacques, Roy Parkyn, Paul Turner, Nicky Ironton, Steve King, Mark Pye, Gary Fitzgerald, Marc Salmon, Lee Endersby, Paul Moran, Trevor Wilkinson, Paul Harding, Brian Stein, Martin St Hilaire and John Richardson

Actually in the replay at West Bromwich.

Harding fair enough, but I don't think Dave Howell's spell at Barnet really counts. He did a bit better as a coach at league level, though.

You're discounting Dave's eight match career at Southend and Birmingham then Tom?

To be fair to this paper, it has to be a bit better than the Gazette though, who is calling him ex Tottenham and Enfield midfielder Dave Howells.

BTW, both the Flying Pig and Tinker have confirmed they will be playing on Sunday. Now there is someone who scored for Enfield in a FA Trophy final at Wembley.

And there was me thinking it was a Graham Heathcote own goal!

Good to see Mr Jacobs will be around. That will certainly please Hendon's new assistant manager. He seemed a bit worried about having to play the whole 90 minutes when I spoke to him earlier this week.
