Did you know that the word 'SPAM' is reckoned to be one of the ten English words that are hardest to translate?

However, due to its use on the Internet, the word is now used in many other languages in its English form with the same exact meaning....

SPAM originally had the unimaginative name: "Hormel Spiced Ham".

In the 1930s, when the product began to lose market share, Hormel announced a naming contest from which the new name was to be chosen.

The current official explanation is the SP and AM were taken from "SPiced hAM" to win a $100 prize.

Other explanations of the origin of the term include the acronyms:

"Specially Processed Assorted Meat",

"Spiced Pork And haM",

"Specially Processed Army Meat",

and

"SPAre hAM".

There are also some less-than-serious explanations, such as:

"Synthetically Produced Artificial Meat",

"Some Parts Are Meat",

or

"Stuff Posing As Meat".

(...just feeding Ian's unhealthy interest in SPAM - can't say I've ever tried eating the stuff! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />)

American rock musician Terry Kath's last words were "Don't worry, it's not loaded" - he then shot himself in the head playing Russian roulette.

PJ - Have you never tried a deep fried SPAM fritter from the chip shop? Absolute heaven served with a large portion of chips and mushy peas!!

.....There is a SPAM Museum which takes up 16,500 square feet and houses 4,752 cans of SPAM from all over the world and throughout the 66-year history of SPAM.

I am trying to ignore Mr Lathey's obsession although I think Spam is pretty tasty.

HG Wells' last words were: "Go away. I'm alright."

An annual festival called 'SPAM Jam' is held in Austin, Minnesota, where the Hormel food company (manufacturers of SPAM) is based.

The festival spans from July 1 to July 7 and includes fireworks, parades, games, a carnival, and of course, the mysterious meat itself.

Each year, those who enter the city during the festivities are likely to see copious amounts of blue and yellow (the colours of the packaging), and myriad dancing men and women in large SPAM can costumes.

(Incidentally, the correct spelling is "SPAM" - all in uppercase - and Hormel are inclined to sue anyone who uses any other form to refer to the meat product, to avoid confusion with 'spam' (all lowercase) - the accepted term for unwanted electronic communication.)

In the late '40's, Oliver Bulleid designed several classes of steam locomotive ('Merchant Navy', 'Battle of Britain' and 'West Country') for the Southern Railway that were nick-named 'SPAM cans' because of their revolutionary 'air-smoothed' boiler casing.

My daughter will be reading this thinking, what on earth is SPAM?!

A section of the SPAM museum, called Global SPAM, features a world map showcasing the countries where SPAM is sold and eaten. In South Korea, for example, SPAM is considered a delicacy!
