Ryman Premier Slough 2-0 Cheshunt

Slough fans welcomed back a familiar face today, with Nick Gyoury returning to Stag Meadow, after transferring to Cheshunt earlier this week. It was therefore rather ironic that Slough had to field a makeshift defence with Ian Hodges partnering Steve Daly at the heart of defence due to Michael Murphy’s suspension and the departures of Martin Moller and Nick Gyoury. After last weeks excellent win over Eastleigh, the Slough fans arrived wanting more of the same, and although this was neither a classic, nor a resounding ‘thumping’, it was a very good team performance in a match we controlled from start to finish. Cheshunt were always going to be underdogs due to the recent loss of their manager and the majority of their first team, but as they say “You can only beat what’s in front of you” and today we certainly did that, and continued our climb up the league.

On a nigh unplayable pitch, we were never going to see fast flowing football and silky skills and this was evident in the first half especially, where the only incident of note in the opening 40 minutes was a firm header from Matt Seedel via a Matt Murphy corner which was saved. Christian Metcalfe was superb again today and controlled the midfield during the half, giving Harris, Spencer and especially Haddow plenty of opportunities to run at the defence. However, on many occasions we were unable to create clear-cut opportunities until Glen Harris rifled just wide after a goalmouth scramble in the 41st minute. Just as people were starting to disperse to the bar, Slough finally broke the deadlock. Matt Murphy (whilst on the floor) managed to find Glen Harris who whipped in a cross and, although everyone missed it, Alex Haddow controlled it on the left wing and sent in an excellent cross to Matt Murphy who smashed the ball home from 10 yards. Half Time 1-0 Slough.

Slough started the second half superbly and within the first ten minutes Harris had a ‘scissor/drop kick’ volley cleared off the line, Murphy shot just over from a Harris through ball and Matt Seedel hit the crossbar. On the hour mark Spencer sent an excellent ball into the box and Hodgey headed the ball past their stranded keeper (Who was claiming offside, as he did unsuccessfully throughout the 2nd half) Slough continued to attack and Ryan Spencer had a shot from the edge of the box which Nick Gyoury headed away as it seemed destined to hit the back of the net. With a full fixture list ahead of us Eddie took the chance to rest key players and a flurry of substations saw Harris, Spencer and Murphy replaced by Veli Hakki, Leigh Mason and Matt Miller respectively. In the final two minutes Matt Miller hit the post with an audacious back heel and Michael Parkin made an excellent save as Cheshunt pushed everyone forward. 2-0 Final score. Congratulations to debutant Leigh Mason, who despite only having 10 minutes on the pitch looked excellent. Man of the match Christian Metcalfe closely followed by Alex Haddow.
