He joked how he had considered quitting with an unbeaten record before saying his chances had been 'f*cked' by Derby after Wednesday 2-0 defeat.

Bates said: 'After the win at Stoke on Saturday I seriously considered retiring on the basis of an undefeated record and that we hadn't conceded a goal.

"It was looking good, but then Derby 'f*cked' it up. Ooops, sorry, Derby buggered it up."

It is the second time in a week that Bates's colourful language has stolen the headlines.

Last Friday Bates was forced to apologise to Sky bosses after describing claims he was about to axe boss Kevin Blackwell as 'a load of b****cks
