I can remember Margate Dynamos winning the Thanet Senior (as it was then) Sunday League Div 2 in 1960/61. I was Secretary and goalie for half the season until I broke my le, then just Secretary.

I remember when the Thanet Premier League had ideas of set up their headquarters at Hartsdown in the 80's when Thanet Council stitched the club up over the name change to Thanet Utd and it nearly caused us to go to the wall.

I would say "last" time that Thanet Council stitched us up but I am losing count of the times it has happened.

Are you the "same" John Baker? You are talking sense! Nice to see you converted. Good on Ya!

So who did you win the coleman cup with then? Brings back memories for me too though I dont think I actually got to win that cup when I played.

Just a thought - is the Morgan Cup still going in the Sunday League?

As I recall that was donated by Mr.Morgan who ran Deccar Sports in King Street, Ramsgate, around 1959.

Cromptons 1971-2, 72/3, 74/5

The great years!

I decide to hang up my boots after 75/6 season as I was getting to old!!!

I thought about refereeing, but considering I gave them a lot of stick, I knew I would not be able to handle it!!!

who did u play for cookie?

Was that a straight forward serious no having a go question to me! Wonders will never cease. Can you just confirm that you are indeed that other John Baker who wasn't registered. You seem too nice. Maybe us knowing your e.mail address now has made you decide to be more wary of what you say. And there's me thinking you had a backhander from certain quarters to get at me and the publicity the club and fans were getting. No matter, its a start. Its a vast improvement. In answer to your question BOWKETTS, alongside Bob Harrop,Charlie McGlinchey & Sid Jest. Micky Adams in goal.Do you remember Norman Pickering & Alf Pittard etc. Are you familiar? We must have played against each other. Wish I'd known at the time!

If I remember correctly we beat you in a semi-final in the coleman cup one year at Birchington rec. Or it may have been another cup.

Is this real,me reminiscing with you.Wonders will not cease. Just shows how friendly people can become if they are civil to each other dosen't it?

We had a difference of opinion cookie, I'm sorry if I came across that I was horrible to you, this was not my indention.

I'm a realist and have strong views and don't hold them back. You must a admit this saga is not all TDC fault, some blame must lay with margate.

So I'm Sorry and would love to meet up and have a beer with you.

Some-one told me , you was/still is a local referee?

It will be good if the two leagues do combine! They have been talking about it for years.

I only started playing (?) in the mid seventies!

Margate FC under 16's and 18's with the legendary Len Draper as supremo! Les Riggs was still at the 'Gate at the time and gave a great pep talk once and kept on about how we should play 4-4-3!

Finally reached the dizzy heights of sunday league with a good bunch of lads, we seemed to play under a different name every other season, Keymarkets, Nottingham Castle, Studio (westgate pub opposite the Not Castle that used to be millies) and finished up Westgate Social Club (usually in it!!)

Great days indeed

Even managed a few games against the "soon to be famous" Paul Zanetti and his magnificent men of Social Monchengladbach!

As a former Social Moenchengladbach 'star' I ought to mention that we were originally Thanet United Social Club and started out as a team of Thanet United supporters - founded by the legendary Colin Gough. Later became Margate Social Club (when TU became Margate again) but then another club did a deal with MFC and nicked our name ! Eventually became Social Moenchengladbach.

Lots of Sunday League players also played for Margate / Thanet and all the 60's and 70's ones are featured on my site - off the top of my head people like Phil Brooman, Peter Gaze, George Shaw, Alan Meek, Andy Norris, as well as Bob Harrop and Syd Jest mentioned earlier in this thread.
