Arsenal star's drink-drive charge

Arsenal paid £2m for Jermaine Pennant in 1999

Arsenal midfielder Jermaine Pennant has been charged with drink-driving after a Mercedes Benz crashed into a lamppost, police said.

The former England under-21 player was arrested after the crash in Aylesbury, Bucks early on Sunday.

After failing a breath test at the scene the 22-year-old was taken to the town's police station and charged.

Police said Pennant, from Barnet, north London, was bailed to appear before magistrates in Aylesbury on 1 February.

Youngest player

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "Police were called to Park Street in Aylesbury at 6.20am following reports that a car had collided with a lamppost.

"Officers attended the scene and arrested the driver of a Mercedes.

"He was taken to Aylesbury Police Station where he was later charged with drink driving."

It is understood the crashed Mercedes belongs to Pennant's Arsenal team mate Ashley Cole.

On 30 November 1999, Pennant made his Arsenal debut against Middlesbrough in a Worthington Cup tie, making him Arsenal's youngest ever first team player at 16 years and 319 days.

Arsenal bought Pennant for £2m from Notts County in 1999, one of the highest amounts paid for a teenager at the time.

It is likely that he will also be charged with driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance.

This is because Nottingham-born Pennant is still serving a 16-month ban imposed last February after police saw him make an illegal U-turn in Paddington, West London. He was also fined £1,200 for that offence.

A possible insurance-related matter may arise too, as it is understood the Mercedes Pennant was driving belongs to his Arsenal team mate Ashley Cole.

I don't think you can blame the players, after all many a sex offender was abused as a child and Wenger has been there for a few years now.

Chezza was indeed around my gaff, good thing she wasn't photographed unlike her "boyfriend" as he left a classy joint with Jenas and Dyer and a couple of blondes yesterday.

BTW Pennant is expected to go down for this, another waste of cash for the so called king of the transfer market (see Jeffers, Wiltord, van Bronkurst, Upson etc etc)
