The thing is, to make a success of any candidate, surely a slight name change might be required?

'Gravesend First' would possibly allow the candidate the opportunity to also stand for other issues, in turn increasing the chance of more votes?

Put a candidate up under the banner of 'Fleet First' and you'll only get the votes of Fleet supporters, whilst alienating yourself from other prospective voters. The candidate, to be elected, has got to appeal to THE WHOLE COMMUNITY.

Erm no. we would be promoting the Fleet.
We should not have any other agenda.

We would not just get Fleet fans votes , but the votes of fans from other clubs.
Despite only getting 1200 home fans for most games , we have thousands of dormant and 2nd club supporters in the area.
It would only work, if we were single issue.
We are promoting the Fleet not world peace.

I disagree - whilst there may be 'closet Fleet supporters', most of the community don't give two hoots about us. If they did then why are they in their local on saturday afternoon?

You'll find more people 'excited' at a league club hoping to come into the area than you worried about a non-league club.

Win them round in more than one area.

Personally I think anything other than a Fleet only agenda is dangerous ground, and something that we should not get involved in.

It will backfire if we get on grounds that we don't have any interest or expertise in.

Its about the publicity not about the winning !

I think that you wrong when you say people don't give two hoots about us. I agree that they don't get off their arses and come down to the ground, but they do look out for our results, and they also jump on the bandwagon for any big games we have. I still remember the 7000 making the trip up to Villa Park.

Our agenda should focus manly on the club and its situation. If we attempt to involve ourselves in other topics it could be our undoing. The ONLY thing we ALL have in common is that we all want to see our club as the town’s only team and to further enhance the clubs reputation within the borough. If we start discussing politics further than the Fleet on here and the idea won’t get off the ground due to differences in opinions.

Publicity should be our first objective, followed closely by securing enough votes to secure our deposit – anything else will be a bonus.

It’s free advertising, and it’s advertising which will see distribution of thousands of leaflets and is bound to receive a few column inches in the local press (at least).

What it also gives us is a chance to gauge the general opinion of local people towards the Fleet. It would give us a valid reason to canvas in the name of the club door-to-door. Anybody who expresses an interest should be noted and targeted with a follow up of some sorts. We can ask people who are football supporters why they DON’T attend Fleet matches.

It will answer the questions we want asking, but haven’t been able to ask to a wider audience. No more guessing what people want from a local club, we will get the answers from the horse’s mouths so to speak.

Well, it shouldn’t be too hard to find a supporter who is reasonably well respected by both the board and by fellow supporters. A person who’s articulate, intelligent and has an excellent knowledge of the fleet. If anyone has any suitable nominations then please feel free to mention them here.

I’m also sure that the majority of Fleet supporters on these forums wouldn’t hesitate to involve themselves in the campaign in whatever way they see fit.

Does anyone else have opinions on this? Could you help? Or do you think that this is a bad idea? If so why?

You're kidding ain't you - Have you looked around the terraces lately .

But in all seriousness it would help if the someone had a standing in the local community already.

I think the ratio of our home attendances to the population of Gravesham speaks for itself on that issue. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Hi guys, sorry to interrupt your politics party but can I play?

I'd stand. Some people might think this is a bad idea if the can give me good enough reason then I'll think again but comments like "because you're a horse's smurf" arn't going to dissway me. Come on people be harsh tell me why I'm not a very good candidate.

Er..... no. The reason? We need a more mature candidate. One who understands the 'Fleet & the needs of the club & supporters alike. Not a johnny come lately, for want of a better phrase.

Personally I'd go for somebody along the lines of Jessica, Dave or Ronnie.

Thank you. Just to emphasise the reasoning further behind my suggestions;

Dave appears to have knowledge of The Representation Of The People Act;

Quote:
You have to get the required number of signatures from registered electors, I think it was 50 the last time I was involved, and this has to be handed in together with the readies something like 3 weeks prior to the date of the election.

Next question: Anyone know anything about the Representation of the People Act, cos you will need an Agent and he will have to keep the candidate out of jail. That expenses form is a real nightmare. (and that was only the council one)

Jessica was / still is(?) a magistrate & will either have the knowledge or will have easy access to it.

Ronnie is my 'dark horse' selection for those people who have an agenda against some of the more prominent members of the trust. Known to many, easy to talk to.....

.....however, at the end of the day, it isn't down to us to push anybody forward. I think we need to get a list of volunteers to declare their interest in standing as a candidate and then get the club & trust to work together in selecting one.
