Mysterious posters............

Recommended Posts

Within the last fortnight a person? has been psoting on here trying to start up a supporters group, something that I myself would be interested in maybe joining along with the fleet trust.

Then today another anon poster would like to know some personnal questions about ownership of our ground club ect ect...

And again today another anon poster seems very interested interested about not retuning to the dark old days of the fleet playing in front of 400 hundred fans.

Same person I would say fairly likeley.

Just because you're not paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you... <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Nothing wrong with a bit of ambition. You can lead the horse to water and all that.

Seems that a few of you will be lead kicking and screaming.

Still reckon theres more people in favour locally than against.

Surely you’re not serious?

How many neutral supporters are there who don’t want Gillingham to move to Gravesend? Very few.

The only people who are against the move are a thousand or so Gravesend fans, because they realise the effect which the relocation will have on their club.

I’ve spoken to lots of football supporters locally who seem quite excited at the prospect of watching league football in the town for the first time ever, in the comfort of a nice modern stadium.

I would estimate those there 1,000 fleet fans within Gravesend and possibly a similar number of Gillingham fans. If Gillingham were to relocate to Gravesend their fan base in the town would far outweigh Fleets, possibly as many as five thousand initially.

Just imagine the effect that would have on the local economy.

Regardless of whether or not the Gills move to Gravesham I feel that the Fleet have very much reached their zenith. I would estimate that the Fleet will remain in the Conference for another two or three seasons perhaps, before the inevitable drop to the Conference South.

It will be a great shame when the Fleet are relegated because I feel the effect would probably mean that the club would be unlikely to challenge for promotion for another quarter of a century at least.

Basically the people who run the Fleet need a kick up the [censored], because you have to admit that for a team not to thrive in a boom area like Thames Gateway with a population soon to be pushing 250,000 is a joke.

If Gravesend is out muscled in the area by Gillingham then they only have themselves to blame.

Paul Scally may have his bad points, but one thing he has which the Fleet could do with is ambition.

Gravesend in 2010 could be home to a 25,000 capacity arena playing host to a league (or even Prermiship) team. All this would be a bitter pill to swallow for their cross town neighbours as they struggle to pull in 600 supporters in their dilapidated cowshed.

The only people you have to feel sorry for are the fleet fans, who have seen their greatest chance of success ruined by the incompetent buffoons who allegedly run the club.

even premership, hmmm, do i pray your joking and laugh loudly, or do i take you as being serious and just go to bed. well as i guess no one is that blind/stupid to believe that as where gillingham currently lay, and for people who dont know they are struggling to keep their heads above the relegation line strugeling to fill their current ground with fans, that they will ever be a premership team.

Scally the man with ambitions, is this the same man who wnats to pull out of football after he manages to secure gillingham finacialy, and look for new projects.

You are criticising our management and ownership structure for lack of ambitions, but only recently has our chairmen began to look at possible sites for a new ground in our "put fleet first" campaign ran in cooperation with the local news paper.

The only people i will blame IF Gravesend are muscled out will be the council for letting it happen, and scally for being the hypocriticle little smurf he is!

Reached are Zenith, like gillingham then? considering you only just survived last year, and are strugling this year, id say you might survive this season but next year you will be relegated into league 1, and then who knows. How the hell did you get the idea of Gillingham ever being a premership team??

Who said that I was a Gillingham fan Blink Jim? You couldn’t be more wrong infract.

Just pointing out that it is now highly likely that the local council will agree planning permission for a new stadium within the borough and that stadium will be occupied by the Gills.

Whether or not Gillingham gain promotion to the premiership within the next five seasons or not at all is irrelevant to Gravesend. The fact would remain that the town would play host to a League Football Club for the first time in its history. Younger supporters and as well as any people relocating from other areas to the borough would instantly be attracted to the new stadium, ease of transport to and from the ground as well as the chance of seeing famous clubs like Nottingham Forest, West Ham, Leeds United and so on playing in the town. Gillingham would go out of their way to retain their Medway fan base (with coaches from the Medway towns) whilst actively trying to increase support for the club within the local area. Just remember, it wasn’t so long ago that Charlton were on the verge of going out of business, homeless and with crowds of 8,000 – look where they are now.

Just imagine the effect of a club of that stature establishing it’s self within Fleets locality.

As you rightly point out big name opposition attracts bigger gates, however you cannot build a 25,000 seat stadium on the off chance that you might have three big games a season in it.

Gillingham already play the teams you mentioned (although they won't be playing all of them next season) yet they cannot fill Priestfields.

If they were to move they would lose the core of their support, yes they would keep the 500 or so fans that live in Gravesham and pick up a few more from local people who can't be bothered to travel to Gillingham to watch them but Medway fans would not travel to Gravesend particularly after the clubs name was changed.

I agree you cannot build a 25,000 seated stadium on the off chance of hosting three big games a season in it. The three games mentioned are only examples and I’m sure you’ll appretiate that there are more than three big clubs in the Championship. There would also be a large leisure complex as well as other social facilities with which to generate extra income. The stadium would also seek international classification which would mean it would be suitable to be used by international teams – not saying that England would play a match in Gravesend, but you need to read between the lines.

Although I think it’s highly unlikely that Gillingham would be able to gain promotion to the Premiership within the next few years, I wouldn’t say it’s impossible. I still think there is more chance of it happening than for example Fleet winning promotion from the Conference to the Football League.

The fact remains that the case of Gillingham relocating to Gravesham is unlike anything seen in football so far, due to the money being pumped into the local area by the government. To suggest that as Gillingham only attract 9,000 at their present home means that they wouldn’t be able to increase upon this in a thriving area like Thames Gateway is very short sighted indeed.

My feeling are that a football club couldn’t ask to be situated in a better area in the country at present, nearly every factor is in place to sustain economic growth over both short and long term. The Gravesend that we were bought up in twenty years ago is a far different place to the one we live in today, and I’m sure you’ll appreciate that the town will change even more drastically in the coming years.

If your chairman can’t see it then he shouldn’t be in the position he’s in. Whilst it’s a virtue to be able to remain cautious and calculated in a situation it’s could be potential suicide if he sits back and does nothing in the next two to three years.

I can’t agree with you their mate. You’re simply talking from a GNFC perspective.

As I’ve said before, the only people who DO NOT wants Gillingham in Gravesham is the thousand or so Gravesend fans. Speak to neutral football supporters currently residing in the borough and you’ll find there are a very many who would welcome Gillingham, and are quite excited about the prospect of a ‘proper’ team playing their football in Gravesend.

There may only be between 500 and 1000 Gills fans currently in the town, but watch that number increase five or even ten fold when the inevitable relocation becomes reality.

So what we have to ask ourselves is what contingency plan do Gravesend and Northfleet have in place? As I see it they don’t. A handful of letters to a local newspaper, and the chairman and board whinging does not constitute a contingency plan. If that’s the case then it’s rather like someone being thrown to the lions being armed only with a feather duster. Unfortunately if the board and certain section of the Fleet supporters don’t wise up then the Paul Scally and Gillingham will eat you for breakfast.
