Who knows what the truth is apart from Dave here !!

Reading the Sunday Mirror today there was a small piece on Sean Devine. He's Exeters highest paid player at 1800 GBP a week. Quite astonishing, it does put Andys job into perspective when this sort of cash is being thrown around and what we have as our budget although i do hope that the rumours of 900 GBP a week on McCarthy are not true.

One thing i would like to point out, why do we have so many defenders at the club. I realise the lad from Colchester will be cheap but surely he's still a cost on the books and whats the point in signing him? We're only short on center halves for FA Trophy matches. On the books now we potentially have 3 keepers and 8 defenders including the lad from Colchester yet strikers of only Essandoh, Omoyimni, Pinnock (if u can call him a striker) and Peters (is he still around?). The squad looks just to lopsided especially if u consider that of the 8 defenders, Popovic, Bunce, Richards, Mccarthy and Porter are all center backs and even Jay Saunders as we have seen can fill in there if necessary...

One thing i would also like to put up for debate and this is controversial is that Andy being a defender in his time has never been able to bring out the best in his strikers that he's had at his disposal. I cant think of any time since the Steve Portway days where we have been able to get a prolific goalscorer at the club. Is this simply because Andy likes to play long ball football upto the big man he always wants up front??? We've had Jefferson Louis at the club this season, who seems to have found his goalscoring boots at Woking yet was hounded out by the supporters IMO plus Hatchy who has gone on to look like a real football league striker. We just seem to scratch around for strikers year after year without seeming to recognise quality when we have it...

My understanding is that he has a heel injury and has only been able to play with Cortizone injections. This only came to light after he came off against Leigh. I suspect that as we would have to pay for the full month whether or not he was able to play it was considered to be too much of a risk.

I beleive that we do not have to contribute towards the costs of "scholars" so they are not a cost on the books. If we are hoping to have any sort of run in the FA Trophy, then we will need cover at centre half and goalkeeper. (Don't forget that the cup-tied players are out for the season, not just this round)

I think you have to bear in mind that Jefferson has had quite a few clubs now without ever really settling. Indeed, judging by the opinion of FGR boss Alan Lewer, who declared that the team spirit at his club was good except for Jefferson when he was there, it looks like being a very delicate task to get the best out of him.

As for McAllister, judging by what Dave says and our constant need to run a tight ship financially, letting him return to Stevenage seems the most sensible option. But as Matt and many others have suggested, this will mean a swift move is needed to sort out our shortcomings up front.

They wouldn't play him against us in the cup game would they!!! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

At least the defence is looking very solid these days, considering the 3 clean sheets on the trot. But I still feel we lack a creative midfielder and a striker. I appreciate the need for cover for the trophy, but really the league is what matters for the team. A run in the FA Trophy would probably be beneficial to the club financially but surely finishing higher in the league carries more importence. The team battled hard on Saturday and we unlucky not to win based on the 2nd half performance. If McAllister plays in the conference cup then I would not be too chuffed!!!!!!

I can't believe that people are mentioning the Steve Portway days !

Steve was a great lad at Southern League- Southern Division level, a predator that pounced on the mistakes of very poor quality defenders - TWO LEAGUES BELOW WHERE WE ARE IN NOW.

Even at Southern Premier level he looked ordinary. This is why the only offer the clUb ever had for him was from Gloucester. Lots of league and Conference Clubs looked at him but realised he did not have the physical power or class to step up to those levels.

He spent his life after leaving us drifting from lower league club to club, never going onto greater things.

So let's all put him into the Fleet Archives and concentrate on todays team where we have some good strikers who just need some quality service from the midfield and not have to continually feed on scraps and chase seemingly endless hoofs from the defenders.

When we were playing good football, Manny, Roy and Mouse were scoring and we looked great. Please, please Andy abandon the long ball game, all our necks are getting stiff !

But isn't it interesting that we always complain after matches about missed chances in the second half, even considering the often poor standard of build-up play?

Yes JC but this is because of desperation measures are then being taken and we are "throwing the kitchen sink" at the other team in an attempt to salvage a point etc. Most of this type of scoring opportunities are rushed efforts or goal mouth scrambles.

The second half of last season and the start of this one we were playing great flowing football and beating teams over the 90 minutes and scoring goals regularly.

Full backs need to be told to pass to midfield players who can in-turn put quality balls through to the forwards etc etc

We were doing it before so why not now

If you read the reports in the NLP you will often see comments from other managers refering to us a s a physical, long ball team !

A valid point.

As for being described as 'physical', it's a bit like the all too common phrase, which admittedly I haven't heard said about us yet, 'they came with a game plan' - translating roughly as 'yes, you stole a point/three points, but you're essentially a poor footballing side'.
