THE RECORDER

In many schools learning to play the recorder for music class is a required part of the curriculum. Before you turn your nose up at the thought of being forced to learn some lame instrument wait until you hear what I have to say in defense of the poor, little plastic recorder. Even though you may want to jump head-first into learning the guitar, piano or drums - learning the recorder can be a major help before you move on to bigger and better things.

While learning to play this instrument, you'll have to learn how to read sheet music too. This is a great skill that can be used with any instrument. It's not hard to play, so it's easy to practice reading the music while you're playing. The recorder is part of the

woodwind family because blowing into the body produces a sound. Anyone can blow air into an instrument - the skill is learning to make notes with those magic fingers.

When you're starting out, your fingers will probably feel clumsy and awkward cuz you're bending and holding them in a way that they aren't used to. With practice it will start to feel natural and your fingers will do what you want them to. You'll also get used to how much pressure you need to apply with your fingers to make a clear note and not one that sounds like a squeaky hinge.

For many years the recorder's been the instrument of choice for music teachers but it's been around since medieval times. You know, same time period as castles, knights, and princesses. Recorders are made out of wood and plastic but the ones you get through your school are usually brown or cream colored plastic. When other people recognize the song you're playing it's a great feeling and you'll know all that practice has paid off.

So if you have to learn to play the recorder - don't sweat it. Think of it as a stepping stone - like the A-B-C's of guitar or whatever instrument you would rather be playing. You've got to start somewhere. After all, Jimi Hendrix wasn't born cranking out great guitar riffs.

The amazing saga of Hornchurch Football club took another twist on Monday when club owner Karl Williams announced that he had taken charge again. Williams ploughed huge sums of money into the club as it rocketed from Ryman division 3 to the Conference South. Then he plunged it into chaos in November by withdrawing his backing after the collapse of his Coldseal Windows business. But, after efforts to sell the club came to nothing, Williams has installed a new team of three at the top.

Former Havering Mayor Brian Eagling returns to the club, as does Williams partner Jennie Cliff, and they are joined, as managing director by Jon Smith, who has for many years been involved with Bishop’s Stortford. OUT “by mutual consent” goes Gary Calder chairman since the start of last season. Out “I was sacked” goes secretary Mick Ewen. Out goes youth team boss John Lawrence, who will live for ever in club legend after his youngsters stepped in to fulfil an FA Trophy tie at Arlesey immediately after the collapse, when all the senior players where released, and pulled off a sensational victory.

An official statement released just before midnight on Wednesday claims that creditors where about to force the club out of business. Williams told us on Monday that the club got into trouble while he was distracted by his business problems. “I went to ground for a month after I closed Coldseal,” he admitted. “I would of sold the club for £1 if the buyer paid off all the debts. There where three potential buyers but none of them had the money. I’ve taken control again because it’s a mess.” And he insists that the club’s future is safe, even if the days of crazy spending are over.

Williams says that he has given the club a budget of £4,500 a week. “We should be making a profit on that, even if crowds dip to 400,” he insisted. “Jon Smith will be the only full-time person at the club.”

He says that he expects the Urchins to finish in the top ten this season.

They are currently sixth, having been well clear at the top when Williams pulled the plug. “After that we’ll see what happens” Williams added. He want’s manager Garry Hill, who has rebuilt the team in the last two months to stay,. Calder refused to comment, “I’d just like to thank the fan’s for their support,” said the former Purfleet, Grays and Billericay manager.

Ewen was furious after it was said that he had walked out and insisted he was effectively sacked. “I wouldn’t want to get a reputation as someone who walks out on a club,” he said, “if we’d all walked out in November there wouldn’t have been a club for Karl Williams to come back to.” Ewen, a former policeman and Southern league referee, joined Hornchurch from Ford United during the summer. “I went in on Monday morning to do some work at the club and chairman Gary Calder told me that we where both going,” he said. “I was devastated after the amount of work Gary and I have done over the last two months,” he said “I’ve been working for nothing all that time to keep the club alive. “I don’t know everything that’s been going on behind the scenes I’ve just done my job,”

Ewen too paid tribute to the fans. “Whatever happened, I wish the club well for their sake.” Williams said: “I don’t understand why Mick was there. Gary appointed him.”

Urchins are without a game until tomorrow (Saturday) week, when they host Newport. “I’ll be back in my usual spot to watch the game,” Williams promised.

The article in the NLP is rubbish anyway. When the truth comes out, I think you'll be running to Karl Williams to apologise for some of the posts on this forum defending Gary Calder. Do your homework! Gary Calder is the biggest con-man I have ever met. He only has one interest - Himself and my god has he sucked some of you in!

And to you "voice of reason" (Darren). Set up an open forum anywhere you choose and invite Gary Calder. Post a date and time of this event and I will be there with evidence to back my arguement.

The truth will out.

How truly absorbing these words of "ill tell you the truth" from a man? who knows
What a pity he fears stating clearly who he-she is?
Even for outsiders the events and comments raise the urge to gag

So who's telling the truth? You've got UU saying the club is safe and Jon Smith saying HX could fold in two weeks. This sort of stuff isn't good for supporters.

Jonny's been outstanding so far this season. Definite player of the year for me so far. Some of his performances have been simply electric and he has shown no fear against bigger stronger Conference opponents. Works bloody hard as well.

He plays in midfield rather than on the wing. At Hornchurch he played on the left wing in a 4-4-2. We play 3-5-2 so the wingbacks need to track back which is not really part of Jonny's game so we tend to play him in the midfield.

Had a great game against Woking I seem to remember. Would have won that but for dodgy refeeing decisions!!
