90 years on and still going strong

I must say that I was a little disapointed in the Fleet admin team in that they failed to acknowledge the 90th birthday of one of their most longstanding and avid fans.

I contacted the young lady in question by telephone at the Fleet ground more than a week before the New Years game. She appeared to be keen and asked for more details, which I emailed to her. Below is a copy of the profile sent to her. I might add, that his other love "Charlton" presented a team shirt to him that had been signed by the Charlton team at his 90th birthday party. Shame on you Fleet Admin.

Hi Cheryl.

Further to our recent telephone conversation relating to Mr Arthur Arterton. Arthur will be 90 years old on New Year's day. He has been an avid supporter of Gravesend and Northfleet since 1920 when the club were two different entities. Prior to amalgamation he would go to watch Gravesend one week, and Northfleet the following week. This was only interrupted by his military service during WW 2

Arthur sits in the main stand to right side of the tunnel, third or fourth row back in fair weather or foul. he's seen the varying fortunes of the Club ebb and flow through the years. It would appear that Arthur has been the only unreported entity that has been constant in the Clubs history.

Arthur is a keen ballroom dancer and also loves to play bowls, He is a very active guy, and his demeanour gentle. I would suggest that he be interviewed by a local journalist before this little bit of history is lost.

I think it would be a magnificent and appropriate gesture for Brian/Andy or Macca to present Arthur a signed shirt on the pitch at our next home game - perhaps even offer a free life season ticket.

85 years watching Fleet - a story fit for the National newspapers.

It would make a very loyal supporter very happy, and would do Fleet's profile no harm either.

Perhaps our own Chas Webster could run and sell the story?

85 years!!!! Good God, it makes my 38 years seem pathetic.

This type of thing normally goes into the programme wich is then read verbatum by the tannoy man. With Christmas, a week before wouldnt have been sufficient to allow details to go in the programme - at least thats my guess.

That doesnt excuse them not announcing it, but I guess its the reason.

Perhaps it will appear in this Saturdays matchday programme??

Well done that man if you can read this Arthur you are a credit to us all.

I hope he can because otherwise it's a bit of a waste of money watching football.

seriously though, this is amazing commitment and passion for the game.
Arthur is a fleet legend, a free season ticket for life and signed shirt are musts, how about a free pint every home match aswell? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
