Halls lead to victory

Enfield Town 2 Bowers & Pitsea 1

Eastway Essex Senior League

Town got 2005 off to the perfect start in what was their first game in almost three weeks.

Though a little rusty, goals from Graeme Hall and Rudi Hall were enough to earn them the points at Goldsdown Road on Bank Holiday Monday.

David Allen caused the visitors problems early on with his pace and was just off target with a shot on the turn. Dean Nyman also shot wide after picking the ball up with his back to goal.

The opener came on 24 minutes. Rudi Hall swung in a splendid corner and Graeme Hall arrived to head past keeper Trevor Wickens.

But Town's lead did not last for long. Lee Digby was caught out at the back and conceded a penalty, which the visitors deftly converted.

Digby was fortunate to stay on the pitch, but more controversy was to follow at the other end. Keeper Wickens collided with Lee Smith and the keeper was unfortunate to receive a straight red card.

Appearing riled by the sending off, Bowers upped their game. Town seemed to have lost their concentration defensively and, as tempers flared, half-time was a welcome cool-off period for both sides.

The second half was not quite as controversial, with Town chasing a winner and Bowers putting up a stoic defence; working hard to keep things level.

It was Rudi Hall who got the goal with a sweetly struck free-kick from the edge of the box.

Bowers had a chance to equalise almost immediately, but Stuart Fergus was denied by some last-ditch defending.

Nyman then had a chance to clinch it for Town, but he was denied by replacement keeper Danny Vile. He then saw another effort hit the post.

At the other end, Tom Dosser mishit his shot with the goal gaping, while Vile did well to deny Nyman again, parrying his fierce shot.

In the final chance of the match, Allen flashed a ball across the face of goal but no-one was on the end of it.

Town travel to Sawbridgeworth Town for another league encounter this Saturday.
