Football........ Better than Elvis or Kylie?

Recommended Posts

Brighton & Hove Albion are doing battle with Elvis and Blue for a place in the top 10 of Sunday's singles chart.

A group of fans calling themselves Seagulls Ska have got together to record a version of classic 80s anthem Tom Hark, to highlight the club's continuing fight for a new stadium.

The man behind the protest song is John Baine, better known as punk poet Attila the Stockbroker, who admits things are going much better than he could have hoped for.

"We were at number 10 in the midweek charts, one place behind Blue - and we're outselling Kylie and Green Day," Baine revealed.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "We've based it on pre-sales. The idea was for people to order it from shops in Brighton or online - and it's worked brilliantly."

The new song is called Tom Hark (We Want Falmer!) - after the area where the fans want the new ground to be built.

Sample lyrics include: "Listen Mr Prescott as we tell you how/We need our Falmer stadium, and we need it now."

Brighton have been without a permanent home since losing the Goldstone Ground eight years ago and Baine urged fans of other clubs sympathetic to their plight ro snap up copies of the single.

"We've got three local shops and the internet on our side, whereas the rest of the Top 40 has massive corporate distribution," he said.

"If you've been to Withdean you'll know that it's like, as we say in the song, playing in Albania Division Eight.

"If you want to help Brighton get a new stadium and an old bunch of punks get into the top 20, then buy the single now!"
