What was the ball pumped up with? What sort of gas? Wouldn't the gas have cooled it down?

Depends, it's usually just pumped up with air though isn't it! If it was Helium, then it would have took off well though.

 

Lets send SPACE CADET SCALLY, and his co pilot JEFF KING on a space mission to retrieve the lost ball. It would take them at least 2 years, wouldn't it,thinking about how far would the ball must have travelled.

Yeah, but if we SEND SCALLY INTO SPACE, we'll have less of a worry about his bright idea for a ground, as by the time he gets back, we'll probably have ours, and we'll be in a league above gillingham anyway.
