Why do spacecraft worry about burning up on re entry then?

Spacecraft worry about all sorts of things. The Space Shuttle wondered if its bum looked big on the back of a booster rocket, and Apollo 13 was just sooo paranoid. Burning up on re-entry is just another of their little idiosynchrasies...

i think its caused by friction of the air molecles on the outer surface of the spcae craft, causing the particles to heat up, and a sort of plasma to form on the outer surface of the heat shield, and as you saw with the columbia, no heat shields = disaster. Dont think there is a same problem for exiting the atmosphere though.

Well i think thats it, saw a documentry once, u see, made me think i know most things.
