Watched it on TV and it was obvious even from the original shots in normal speed that it was well in. Carroll's reaction helped him, many keeper's may have laid in the net having clawed it out knowing it was well in, but for some reason he kept chasing the ball so if the lino didn't have a clear view that may have tipped the balance. All in all it shows that some technology is needed in football.

It's great you can now go to Old Trafford score the only goal of the game and still not pick up all three points. I wonder if Sir Alex will be moaning to the press about how lucky his team were. Doubt it.

The linesman appeared to have his head down as he was running and therefore could not have seen it. The fourth official who was Mark Halsey apparently saw that it was a goal but explained to Martin Jol that he could not intervene.

another point, like I tried to explain to my brother last night. The ref couldn't see, so he asked his linesman. The linesman admitted he couldn't see either therefore no goal. If referee's started giving decisions because they thought they might have spotted something we'll be in an even bigger mess

Certainly a dreadful decision by the officials, and perhaps not surprising that such a decision should favour Manchester United at Old Trafford, but two points are worth making. Firstly, mistakes are integral to the game of football and whether they are made by players or officials, they make the game more interesting and unpredictable which we all enjoy. Secondly, the goalkeeper knew it was a goal and so is guilty of cheating and conning the officials, just as much as a dive for a penalty, or 'scoring' with a handball.

Have to disagree Marcus. If the linesman and referee don't have a clear view then it doesn't matter if they are at Old Trafford or Stag Meadow. Weren't we apparently lucky against Dover when we were told the ball was well over the line? There is all this chat about Man U getting everything for them at home and the penalties against situation is an indicator of that which no one can doubt. However, Arsenal, Chelsea and others have got lucky in recent times for just as blatant wrongdoings but they are just put down to refereeing errors not some campaign to help Man U. Surely if this was the case then it would be United 11 points clear of Chelsea and not the other way round.
