Minute's silence = pointless.

Collection = the sensible thing to do.

Controversial opinion?

I agree, I was sorry for the people who lost loved ones but I don't mourn them so what is the point of me standing still for a minute in order to reflect on what happened. Given the choice I'd much rather help by donating some cash.

With Regards to Fleet Fan he may have been joking. Ironic maybe?

Not particularly - or at least it shouldn't be. As Harry suggests above, the material gain of a collection is of more worth and significance.

Not to mention that it waters down the point of a minutes silence for Remembrance Day on the 11th November. This should be the one and only time that multiple minutes of silence should be observed. If I had just suffered what had happened out there, and I had no home, no food, and no water. I wouldn’t give a rat’s [censored] that some people on the other side of the world shut up for three minutes! I would want food!

This was all started by the yanks for September 11th and is out of control now. It seemed that football matches over did this too, so us missing it is no great shakes!

Actually the minutes silence wasn't for people without food......it was for the people killed....and the Yanks didn't start it after 911....it has always been done when British people have been killed in some major disaster.

But my point is that being silent for three minutes is not going to help those people that survived! Where I work (a big international company) someone asked what we would be doing for the Tsunami appeal. The reply was we would be observing the three minutes silence and that was it! It was observed impeccably, but I all could think about during those three minutes was the children drinking dirty water not about the dead people. We cannot help them now, but we can help the survivors. This is why our own charity division is in the throws of organising a collection for the survivors. Anyway this is way of topic for this forum so let’s leave it there!

It is not meant to help the people who are alive......it is meant as a mark of RESPECT to the people who died.

Trouble is nowadays people have very little respect for other people anyway, so showing respect for the dead is probably pointless in those peoples minds. So maybe all Minute silences should be done away with in their minds..........certainly not mine!
